‘What then did the Son of God do for us? How did He trample down our death, our so cruel tyrant? The Son of God, I answer, having taken upon Himself our corruptible body, by His sufferings paid the righteous judgment of God for our transgressions, as the Prophet foretold, saying: “He was wounded for our sins and bruised for our iniquities.”(Isa. 53:5)
Having thus paid for our sins, He delivered us from eternal punishment and from the endless fire; and moreover, in His immeasurable compassion, He made us also sons of God and heirs of the heavenly kingdom (cf. Rom. 8:17). Was not much of the authority of greedy and insatiable death over sinners thereby taken away? Truly we ought to cry out with the Apostle: “O death, where is thy sting? O hades, where is thy victory?”(1 Cor. 15:55)
Where now are your captives and your victims?’
