Even more than this, @zidman - measurement precision is maximised when the probability of responding correctly is 50-50. We build adaptive tests that aim to balance this level of challenge with engagement and motivation such that the best test is one where students score 60-70%

Well-constructed tests have low floors (so even students who struggle the most can be assessed) & high ceilings (so the most advanced students can be differentiated). Giving marks like 47/100 passing grade can reflect good testing practice. (1/3)
