Today, UNIFIL paid tribute to the life and work of Major Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, First Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Corporal Farizal Rhomadon from Indonesia, who lost their lives in two incidents on March 29 and 30 while bravely carrying out their duties in south Lebanon.

On 29-30 March, 3 peacekeepers from Indonesia serving with @UNIFIL_ were killed while others were injured. Peacekeepers are #NotATarget, and attacks on peacekeepers may constitute war crimes. The @UN urges all actors to ensure the safety & security of peacekeepers at all times.

Israel now has one of the world’s most extreme death penalty laws. Israel is brazenly granting itself free rein to execute Palestinians while stripping away the most basic fair-trial safeguards. The death penalty will now become part of the system of apartheid, genocide and occupation that Palestinians continue to suffer under. This law has passed in the same month in which Israeli military attorney general dropped all charges against Israeli soldiers accused of sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee. Despite few amendments to the previous drafts, any death sentences imposed under this law would constitute a violation of the right to life and, when imposed against Palestinians from the OPT, may also amount to war crimes. The international community must exert maximum pressure on the Israeli authorities to immediately repeal this law, fully abolish the death penalty, and dismantle all laws and practices that contribute to the system of apartheid against Palestinians.

Our medics were not missing… they were buried. Buried beneath a silence heavier than words, and beneath pain beyond endurance. The survivor, Asaad Al-Nassasra, speaks—his voice bearing witness to loss; to companions who left with him on a humanitarian mission, but he returned alone… leaving them under the soil without a farewell. And on March 30, 2025, the truth emerged as it is: bodies concealed, souls departed, and a wound that will never close. They were deliberately killed by Israeli occupation forces. This is not a story of survival… but a testimony to a tragedy that will remain.

Israel must immediately repeal the discriminatory death penalty law passed today by the Knesset, as it contravenes Israel’s obligations under international law. The United Nations opposes the death penalty under all circumstances. The implementation of this new law would violate international law's prohibition of cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. Additionally, this law further entrenches Israel’s violation of the prohibition of racial segregation and apartheid as it will exclusively apply to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Israel, who are often convicted after unfair trials. Israel's expanding military operations in southern Lebanon have resulted in the death of yet another health worker today. A paramedic was killed in a strike on an ambulance in Bint Jbeil. Additionally, a medical warehouse in the same city was destroyed in an attack. Prior to today's strikes, @WHO has verified that 51 Lebanese health workers have been killed since 2 March, including nine paramedics just yesterday. Attacks on health facilities must cease immediately. This cannot become the norm. Health workers are safeguarded under international humanitarian law and should not be targeted. Peace is the best medicine.

It’s been 456 days since Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was arbitrarily detained by Israeli forces. He’s been held without charge or trial, and has been subjected to ill-treatment. Israeli authorities must immediately and unconditionally release him and all Palestinians held in arbitrary detention. Violence remains at record levels across the occupied #WestBank. As recently highlighted by @UNHumanRights, settler violence, often in the presence of Israeli forces, has escalated, driving repeated attacks, intimidation, property damage and forcible displacement of Palestinians. This must stop.
