Many students will be enrolling in public health programs in the next few months. One decision will quietly stress many of them: Which concentration should I choose? Epidemiology? Biostatistics? Global health? Health policy? Health informatics? Maternal and child health? The honest answer is that there is no perfect concentration. But there are better ways to choose. This is especially true for international students who may need to think carefully about OPT, job fit, and skills employers can clearly understand. Do not choose a concentration only because the title sounds impressive. Choose one that gives you usable skills. —- Before you decide, ask these questions: ① What hard skills will I graduate with? → Can I analyze data? → Can I use R, SAS, Stata, Python, SQL, Tableau, or Power BI? → Can I write a policy brief? A concentration should leave you with skills you can point to on a résumé. ② What jobs does this concentration naturally connect to? Some concentrations have clearer entry-level job pathways. → Epidemiology & Biostatistics can connect to analyst, research, pharma, clinical trials, and academic roles. → Health policy can connect to policy analyst, program analyst, advocacy and health systems roles. → Global health can connect to program, research, NGO, and international development roles, but the path may need more planning. The name of the concentration is less useful than the jobs it can help you compete for. ③ Will this concentration help me build a portfolio? This matters more than many students realize. By graduation, try to have evidence of your skills: → A data analysis project → A policy brief → A literature review → A dashboard → A manuscript Employers need to see what you can do. ④ Does the concentration fit the job market I am entering? For international students, this question is serious. OPT time is limited. You may not have the luxury of spending many months explaining why your degree is relevant. Your concentration, coursework, practicum, résumé, and LinkedIn profile should tell one clear story. For example: → “I study epidemiology and have skills in surveillance, data analysis, and outbreak investigation.” That clarity helps. ⑤ Am I choosing based on interest alone? Interest matters. But interest without skill can become a problem. If you love global health, build technical skills inside it. If you love health equity, learn evaluation, policy analysis, qualitative methods, or data work. If you love community health, learn program planning, grant writing, monitoring, and implementation. Passion opens the door. Skill helps you stay in the room. —- My advice: Choose a concentration that gives you three things: → A clear skill set → A realistic job pathway → A story employers can understand quickly Which public health concentration are you considering right now?

“I was praying for her because she has brought trouble for herself and her children by telling men of God that ‘you are all thieves.’” - Sam Korankye Ankrah, Apostle General of Royalhouse Chapel International, reacting to a viral video in which a member of the Methodist Church Ghana accused church leaders of being thieves.

Can someone please explain, in simple terms, the issue between doctors at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the medical laboratory scientists over lab access? I have heard it could result in a doctors’ strike on May 2. I have seen different opinions everywhere, but I still don’t clearly understand the actual problem. I’d really appreciate a clear and simple explanation. Bless 🙏👊🏾

@dr_berkai Does it make sense for someone who has studied laboratory science their entire life and specialized in the field to be subordinate to someone who only completed a three year top up course, and then have that individual validate the results the lab professionals produced?

Medical Doctors vrs Medical Lab Scientists 🙂 The Korle-Bu Doctors Association has threatened to embark on an industrial strike at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital from 2nd May,2026 if a set of demands on laboratory operations and proposed outpatient service reforms are not addressed by the close of Thursday, April 30, 2026. But let’s be honest…where do we draw the line between protecting patient safety and protecting professional territory? What do you think?

This is one of the most useless institutions in Ghana. When the government released recruitment slots, you could only secure 17% of them, while entire batches of graduates from 2020 to 2024 remain at home unemployed. Now a new directive has been issued for mass recruitment, which is supposed to be highly competitive, yet you sit unconcerned. Your main priority seems to be forcing unemployed graduates to renew their PINs almost every year. When the portal was opened, it was widely alleged that politicians hijacked most of the slots. As a result, many highly qualified professionals couldn’t even submit their applications. They are currently lamenting online, but you remain completely aloof, acting as if nothing is wrong. Shame on you.
