@BretDevereaux Hi, random unrelated question: I'm working on Senate simulator. Right now with 10 Quaestors elected every year, and using Bruce Frier's mortality rate estimates, it stabilizes at ~200 Senators. are my mortality assumptions too high? Or were there other ways to become a senator?

Further DA: Veilguard thoughts: I've heard folks rip on the writing. I think it's not *bad* but it also isn't strong. Part of the problem for me is not enough thought was put in to how individuals embedded in this world might talk about things. 1/

@CartoonsHateHer Cheating is bad, but honestly I’m not sure there’s *that* big a difference, if someone met someone new and connected emotionally, whether they waited until officially breaking things off with the first person before sleeping with the new person or not

I was actually working on a piece about this but I think because being against “adultery” is seen as a right wing regressive thing lots of people on the left were negatively polarized into saying it’s super chill

@CartoonsHateHer I have a take: the roots of cottagecore fantasy is Tolkien and the way he depicts the Shire with traditional farming techniques and aesthetics but with modern agricultural yields and abundance

@CartoonsHateHer I have to carry out five-month old on my shoulder and walk in circles doing tiny little bounces to keep him calm. My wife can just sit down holding him on the crook of her arm while watching Netflix

Here’s the thing, I love being a mom but I feel like the “snuggling cute babies all day” part of being a SAHM is lowkey fake…for me it’s more like “chasing a baby who repeatedly tries to climb up the stairs and swallow older sibling’s small hazardous toys”

@asymmetricinfo I'm thinking of things like Adobo (Philippines) which is highly salted, and keeps better without refrigeration than regular meat. Butter and cheese would be an example too, because it keeps. Also bread.

If you are making fun of how terrible all the food was in the 1950s, some things to keep in mind 🧵: 1) Many of the worst recipes are from cookbooks created to promote various foodstuffs, and probably no one except the poor domestic scientist who created them ever made them.

@OAlexanderDK @morninggloria I like that the Trump camp isn’t confident of a win but they weren’t confident of a win in 2016 either. I’m fact, they were pretty sure they would lose.

If Harris wins, Musk will have lost a foolish, existential gamble, and the natural consequence of that should be the end of his chapter of history

Whatever you think of JD Vance--and I am not a fan of a lot of the things he says these days--it's hard to imagine Harris, Walz, or Trump having this kind of mastery of wonky detail

@dilanesper @Knicks4lyfe1 @asymmetricinfo I can talk a lot about all the ways in which the leaders of the Palestinian national movements have repeatedly made things worse for Palestinian people in their pursuit of maximalist goals. But that doesn’t make what Israel is doing in the West Bank on.

@Knicks4lyfe1 @eric_xin9 @asymmetricinfo the settlements are indeed illegal. and they are obstacles to peace. the problem is the Palestinian movement doesn't focus on them. they focus on the Naqba and Gaza and defending Hamas. So there is no pressure on Israel to stop settlements.

This story has been haunting me a few days. And I think there's something here about our own discourse that is worth talking about. It has to do with how people say very dumb things about levels of freedom in countries. 1/

In Iran, a woman who was accosted by the “morality police” for not wearing hijab removes her clothing & roams the streets in defiance. She has since been arrested by IRGC forces and forcibly disappeared. This is the brave face of true resistance.

@dilanesper @asymmetricinfo Yes again, not exactly apartheid, but similar in effect. How is eventually forcing all the Palestinians in the West Bank into Ramallah and Hebron better than forcing all the Africans into Lesotho and Swaziland?

@dilanesper @asymmetricinfo The internal sovereign homelands thing seems like a red herring. They’re kicking Palestinians out of their homes into smaller and smaller areas controlled by the PA. How is that substantively better? And Likud’s long term goal is for the Palestinians to not be there anymore.

@janecoaston I don’t think it’s a mashup. It’s just a Xinjiang staple that’s become popular throughout China.

@dilanesper @asymmetricinfo I said comparable, not exactly the same. I’d argue the separate legal systems, restrictions on movement, and unfair land allocation are more important than the fact it’s based on citizenship rather than explicit racial classification. As for deportation, Bibi et al are trying

@eric_xin9 @asymmetricinfo not honestly, no. at best you can say it has some apartheid like barriers and checkpoints. But actual Apartheid was A LOT more than that.
