@NamelessMTG It's not better tho, exile is far better than destroy, even when able to target creature and walkers. It bypasses indestructible for one and prevents recursions. But also giving opponent a land is a major downside compared to some lifegain. There's a reason swords beats path.

Not only does WotC add random cards to foundations every now and then, but I feel like whenever I look away they’re secretly giving the elemental subtype to another creature

@theFrostmind @SaffronOlive Final Fantasy has a few characters that would fit as planeswalker, Emet-Selch as a ascian can shift between worlds. Jenova as a alien could fit the bill if one sees planet = plane. And would fit her narative as she doesn't activley do anything, just passivley.

@SaffronOlive More food for thought: Avatar is the first Universes Beyond set that actually could’ve had a planeswalker in it.

I was thinking about how Standard seems fairly light on planeswalker removal, and then I realized it was because of Universes Beyond sets. Since UB doesn't have planeswalkers, UB removal spells don't include planeswalkers, so only 50% of sets get planeswalker removal now. (I checked Scryfall, and there are currently zero cards in Standard UB sets with the word "planeswalker" in their rules text).

@WillErker Unless you have a way to discount the airbend cost it's going to be way too slow for our current standard meta. Hell, even appa is sluggish in terms of tempo for the meta.

Random question: are you avoiding content about Spider-man cards? Asking because I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that videos focused on Spider-man cards (like Carnage Combo or Infinite Web-Slinging) have gotten meaningfully less views than other gameplay videos.

@SaffronOlive Kinda disagree on the premise. Equipment in mirrodin was rather weak with the outliners being skullclamp and cranial plating. Then again a equipment deck in that era needed to compete against affinity :D

One thing I've learned about Wizards over the years is that when they get a new idea they tend to take it too far and then have to moderate (which to their credit, they typical do). This happens in card design - they make equipment for the first time and push too far, same with Vehicles, or planeswalkers with static abilities - but also with business stuff (we're going to be an esport, let's just cancel pretty much everything and go all in on mythic invitationals) and product design (mini sets are amazing, let's make a bunch of them before the first one - Aftermath - even drops, oops). I think it's possible that going with more than half of sets being universes beyond next year will be another example of this, and if it doesn't work as well as they are hoping, I actually do have faith that they'll change course, based on their history. I would be shocked to see Universes Beyond go away because we know that when a UB set goes well it's one of the most profitable (and I'd argue best) things Wizards does, but pulling back to a less UB heavy mix of sets does seem very possible, depending on how next year goes. It's also important to remember that sets are designed 2+ years ahead of release and from what I've heard some UB sets take even longer, so when a course correction is needed, it usually takes a while to actually filter out into the Magic ecosystem.

@SaffronOlive I don't have a problem with the concept of UB, but it's more a problem of quantity and quality of them. I don't like Vivi or One Ring, and I'm not fond of seven sets next year. Still I liked FF and probably Trek.

I really wish people would be a bit kinder and more respectful to each other, both in the Magic world and in the real one. It makes me sad to see people saying stuff like "people who like UB should be bullied from the game" or "it's just a kids game, you shouldn't care so much."

@andymangold In red, I think Ball Lightning might be the right answer, but for now I'm going with spellsling-to-deal-direct-damage. Red likes spells, direct damage, and pinging (repeatedly dealing damage). Guttersnipe and Thermo-Alchemist are variations on the theme.

As a follow-up to @andymangold's fun game from yesterday: Which specific mechanic (not necessarily just keywords) is the "green-est"? And the same for white, blue, black, and red? Doesn't have to be a primarily creature-based mechanic, but mine are. I'll put my thoughts 👇
