A friendly reminder this Pride season, that everyone's coming out story is different and that everyone's is just as important as the other persons. Especially in eras/places where people couldn't come out or still can't come out. I came out to my friends in college casually over drinks but I never thought I would come out to my family. I was bi, I could choose the easy option and be with a girl and hide my true self forever. My story changed when I met Josh though. I told myself it's just fun. We can just be friends. But I quickly learned that he brought me true happiness and challenges that I never had before. I never wanted to chase that high and that true love ever again. As a personal rule, I told myself I had to tell my family before I got engaged. I proposed to Josh in Puerto Rico. We were to meet a photographer for fun pictures as a gift and a surprise to Josh, his engagement photos. On the way to meet the photographer I text a pretyped message to my family and shut my phone off, debated even throwing my phone in the ocean. I proposed, he said yes, thankfully, and we had the most fun. After, Josh was by my side and read the messages from my family. After a lot of tears and awkwardness, we have my family's support but I am blessed for the outcome. Some people aren't that lucky. To those of you that are hiding your true selves, it's hard and I'm sorry you have to do that, but don't sacrifice your true love and happiness. Remember there's a community out here to support you. Find your tribe of people that will support you and love you, even if it's digitally. Sometimes their bond is even stronger than family. You are loved. You are welcomed. Be your true self.
