@jonsopel How about a different interpretation: Mr Johnson is up to his old game of wanting to appear to be a bumbling fool while manipulating everybody!

@jonsopel Were these people not allowed to take along any possessions, not even tooth brushes? This is a rather strange process.

@i_iratus A wonderful essay on values, Great Bear, you plough Mr Sunak into the ground! May he prove fertile.

Personal News. I had a heart attack at the gym on Friday night. Been in hospital ever since. Not knowing what's wrong terrifying. Today had angiogram and dodgy artery now mended. Thank you so much to all the staff at St George's. You could not have cared more.

@carolvorders I never thought I would defend a conservative PM, especially not this one. However: a blind trust is a trust that HE cannot see / manage, to avoid conflicts of interest.

BREAKING Rishi Sunak's tax return has just been published. In tax year 2022/23 he made c£2.3m. He paid £520,000 in tax. All legal. An effective tax rate of c 23% as a lot of it was capital gain (eg profit on share sales) not income. We don't know which company shares he earned these millions from, or where he holds his shares, as he holds his wealth in a "blind trust"....which is blind to the rest of us. Employees generally pay much higher rates of tax + national insurance.

@MickWhelanASLEF @adgreenmusic Strikes are not going to bring either the DfT or the Treasury to the negotiating table. Instead, they will bleed the union members dry while allowing the Government to posture and denigrate the workers. Please display some cunning, Mick.

@adgreenmusic Really spent weeks working on the safe operation of the railway so other key workers could keep the country going and not die whilst doing so you are a disgrace.

@philatrail The crashworthiness of HST power cars could have been improved easily at limited cost some ten years ago but the return on investment in significantly polluting diesel trains is just not worthwhile. Mind you, I love the beasts. Convert to electric traction and add a safety cage!

An interesting perspective on the Republican Party of the past: Herbert Clark Hoover, 31st President of the US (1929 to 1933) had been a great mining engineer. A little known achievement was the translation of Agricola's 'De Re Metallica' from Latin, with his wife Lou, in 1912.

@seatsixtyone I can recommend 'Voyageur Nisseur' on 19 Rue d'Alsace-Lorraine. They offer very good and reasonably priced French food.

NICE VILLE station guide added to Seat61, seat61.com/stations/nice.…. Another +ve result of the landslide blocking Paris-Milan & my diversion via Nice! Comments & feedback welcome. Forgot to check the left luggage, not convinced it's still open. Think Carrefour Express has closed.

I have been elected an FRAENg. I am most grateful to the SoE and BCRRE at the University of Birmingham for allowing me the space and time to develop railway systems education. I pay tribute to the engineering education staff at Birmingham for their role in this! @RAEngNews @bcrre

.@jeffsmithetc Please support funding for our canals & rescind the reduction that the current government has announced, which could lead to their decline and the eventual closure of parts of the network. Please speak up for your constituents & #KeepCanalsAlive
