'I genuinely don't want to be the person saying this ... but on the 1st January, we're currently expecting to see the price cap rise by another 51% ... which will take someone on typical use to over £5,300 a year' @MartinSLewis #ThisMorning

@MartinSLewis I lived in the 40s 50s 60s with only one fire no double glazing loft insulation no felt between slates, ice on the inside of windows, used hot water bottles, coats on beds. Why now should people be dieing? Is it because we've gone soft.

I've been accused of catastrophising about the energy hikes that have now come true. Yet let me be plain, 'doom-mongering' or not. More help is desperately needed for poorest or people will die this winter due to unaffordability of an 80% SO FAR energy price cap hike.

Just recorded a practical video explainer of what the price cap means, what happens next, and answering your Q&As. The MSE team just checking it then working out how we get subtitles & upload (its long, you dont have to watch it all) :)

If MPs couldn’t claim back unlimited energy bills, would they then actually do something? Asking for a country

Nationalise the energy supply companies, distribution networks, wholesale suppliers and electricity generators. Citizens’ panels, local authorities advising regulators, workers on the board. We can only have energy security when we own it…..

This is an emergency. We saw in Covid we can act when we need to. Not only will we see families fall into unpayable arrears, we’ll see businesses fold and people out of work, we’ll see our public services spend their budgets to energy companies. Nationalise.

‘No government minister is available’ in the middle of an ever deepening energy crisis. The Conservative Party isn’t fit for office.

I am 55. I do not remember the U.K. being in a more desperate state that it is today - and I lived right through Thatcher.

The table below shows how we use our energy in UK. Heating homes uses only 21% of the total, so talk about insulating our homes to solve the energy crisis is nonsense. It will make a difference at the margin but that’s it. There is no shortage of fuel - it’s under our feet!

If I were advising the UK Prime Minister, I would tell them to make a televised statement to the nation tonight (or very soon) along the following lines: 1. We are in an energy crisis. This crisis is having a dreadful effect on everyone’s finances. And it is going to get worse.
