Am I the only one here who is absolutely not getting anything watching this video? Looks like, you wrote some extension to scrape scholars profiles. But why? That information is publicly available, isn't it? If you're getting paid for each profile, get $0.2 from mine :D scholar.google.com/citations?user…

My student won the 3-Minutes Thesis (3MT) Competition, and here's how - Takeaway for Makers! First and foremost, let's start with a huge congratulations to Aswathi (not on X) for her remarkable victory at the 3MT competition held at SIT today. I couldn't be prouder! But what's truly fascinating is the story behind her success, and that's what I want to share with you in this post. As an engineering lecturer, I always appreciated the abundance of technical numbers in the presentations. But this year, I sought a different approach to help my engineering students succeed. I realized that they typically lack people skills due to the technical focus of their curriculum, making it challenging to win against participants from more presentation-oriented departments. Fortunately, I discovered the power of storytelling and decided to integrate its principles into 3MT to make engineering content more engaging. This required extensive research which kept me busy over the weekends. During this process, Aswathi, who was initially nervous, approached me with enthusiasm. Her confidence grew when we shifted our focus from complex equations and graphs to the Hero's Journey narrative structure, creating a compelling plot. We divided the speech into three key segments: 1. Minute #1 (Story): - The call to adventure: A captivating story about her friend and a flooded house. - Role as a mentor: Aswathi guided her friend through an engineering solution. - Ordeal and the resurrection: Together, they resolved the issue, faced initial failure, and succeeded by addressing non-engineering aspects. 2. Minute #2 (Engineering): - Seamless transition to the engineering project. - Emphasis on the analysis's significance for the rig's lifespan. 3. Minute #3 (Value): - Return with the elixir: Highlighted how her research would help the general public in Invercargill and other places in New Zealand. In the two days leading up to the final event, she rehearsed her presentation in front of my colleague, Carlo (huge thanks!). Unfortunately, it didn't go as planned. She stumbled over her lines, forgot parts of the plot, and appeared utterly confused. In that moment, I held myself responsible for introducing the storytelling. The next day, something incredible happened. She changed her story, wanting to replace her friend with herself as the heroine. Her new presentation was much better. I started trusting the storytelling formula again! Today was the big day. She presented to a large audience, following our plan carefully. When the winners were announced, her surprised expression revealed their praise for her storytelling skills and audience engagement, proving that compelling stories lead to success. The key lesson is that presenting to a general audience can be challenging due to technical jargon, but everyone appreciates stories. Mastering the art and science of storytelling can yield remarkable results.
