Sounds like the human genome project equivalent of this decade is building an AI-powered model of the cell.
Alex Rives@alexrives

Scaling laws are powering AI. It’s time to scale biology. Today we’re launching the Virtual Biology Initiative to generate the data to unlock scaling laws in biology and build accurate predictive models of the cell. Digital representations of proteins are already expanding our understanding of life at the molecular level, and accelerating the design of molecules and medicines. Accurate digital representations of the cell could reveal the mechanisms that are responsible for disease, and show how to reverse them. The protein data bank, and worldwide repositories of protein sequence biodiversity were created through decades of work by the scientific community. The advances in artificial intelligence for proteins would not have been possible without them. The cell is orders of magnitude more complex, and we will need to create the data in just a few years rather than decades. This will require a coordinated global effort. We're partnering with Broad, Wellcome Sanger, Arc, Allen, Human Cell Atlas, Human Protein Atlas, NVIDIA, and Renaissance Philanthropy. Biohub is contributing to this effort as both a funder and a builder. We are developing microscopy to observe millions of cells in living organisms, and cryo-ET to resolve the cell in atomic detail. We're building instruments that expand the range of modalities and parameters that can be simultaneously measured. We’re developing molecular, cellular, and tissue engineering to create models of disease and design interventions. The data we generate will be available to the worldwide scientific community. We’re also committing $100M over the next five years to support work beyond Biohub. We invite other scientific teams and funders to join. Link: biohub.org/news/virtual-b…

@Jason______A @CopyWithOlli American culture reflexively dismisses generational wealth as unearned. Instead of scorning wealthy dynasties, we should study the principles, behaviors, and structures that let certain families compound success across generations while most do not.

I was skeptical, but now I’m completely convinced. Fencing will become super popular due to this one very particular improvement to the sport. “Sword tip visualization” It’s going to debut at the summer olympics. Every single duel will look like a bloody lightsaber fight

The extreme mindset of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger: 1. You are a winner, Arnold. I wrote this down and put it where I would see it. I repeated it a dozen times a day. 2. My drive was unusual, I talked differently than my friends; I was hungrier for success than anyone I knew. 3. I had this insatiable drive to get there sooner. Whereas most people were satisfied to train two or three times a week, I quickly escalated my program to six workouts a week. 4. I'd always been impressed by stories of greatness and power. Caesar, Charlemagne, Napoleon were names I knew and remembered. I wanted to do something special, to be recognized as the best. 5. I was literally addicted. 6. I didn't care what I had to go through to get it. 7. My mind was totally locked into working out and I was annoyed if anything took me away from it. 8. My weight room was not heated. It was freezing. I didn't care. I trained without heat, even on days when the temperature went below zero. 9. I had a photographer take pictures at least once a month. I studied each shot with a magnifying glass. 10. I sacrificed a lot of things most bodybuilders didn’t want to give up. I just didn't care, I wanted to win more than anything. And whatever it took to do it, I did. 11. Every day I hear someone say, "I'm too fat. I need to lose twenty-five pounds, but I can't. I never seem to improve." I'd hate myself if I had that kind of attitude, if I were that weak. 12. I listened only to my inner voice, my instincts. 13. People's ideas were small. There was too much contentment, too much acceptance of things as they'd always been. 14. My own thinking was tuned in to only one thing: becoming Mr. Universe. In my own mind, I was Mr. Universe; I had this absolutely clear vision of myself up on the dais with the trophy. It was only a matter of time before the whole world would be able to see it too. And it made no difference to me how much I had to struggle to get there. 15. Once I was over the initial disappointment of losing, I began trying to understand exactly why I had lost. I tried to be honest, to analyze it fairly. I still had some serious weaknesses. For me, that was a real turning point. 16. I was relying on one thing. What I had more than anyone else was drive. I was hungrier than anybody. I wanted it so badly it hurt. I knew there could be no one else in the world who wanted this title as much as I did. 17. I had thought perhaps he had some special exercises, but that wasn’t true. He concentrated on the standard exercises. That was his "secret" —concentration. 18. I started training in an area where there were no distractions. 19. I had lists and charts of the things I needed to concentrate on pasted all over. I looked at them every day before I began working out. It became a twenty-four-hour-a-day job; I had to think about it all the time. 20. I continued doing precisely what I knew I needed to do. In my mind, there was only one possibility for me and that was to go to the top, to be the best. 21. I remember certain people trying to put negative thoughts into my mind, trying to persuade me to slow down. But I had found the thing to which I wanted to devote my total energies and there was no stopping me. 22. They weren't mentally prepared for intensive championship training; they weren't thinking about it. I knew the secret: Concentrate while you're training. Do not allow other thoughts to enter your mind. 23. When I went to the gym I got rid of every alien thought in my mind. 24. I wanted to create an empire.

@MartinShkreli @DutchRojas 10%+ net profit is very good! HCA is nowhere near least profitable businesses, margin wise, within the S&P. Retailers, food distributors, engineering, contractors, etc: these types of companies actually run on thin margins.

If I could fund a single company that doesn’t exist right now it would be… Machine Maintenance as a Service $222B/year in the US is spent on machine maintenance or repair. Features would include: - quarterly PMs on machines - full service history with access to service history of other exact machines - predictive from sensors or cameras - instant buy spare parts from online store - operator training module - access to AI chat bot (ik cringe) that knows your machine inside out This would be an incredible bet as robotics scale and maintenance is inevitable. I’d hire the oldest guys with the most amount of tribal knowledge. Every single repair or process would be documented with data points and feed into our system correlated to a specific machine.

Horrible seeing Elina Vähälä’s $1-million Guadagnini violin get knocked out of her hands by conductor Matthew Halls. Halls was fired by the Oregon Bach Festival in 2017 for "alleged discrimination against women and a person of color", maybe a second chance for him was a bad idea.

99% of people really do not understand abundance as Elon describes it. The fundamental reason is that they don’t understand compound growth. Same people who would probably pick 1 million dollars today over a penny that doubles in value every day for 30 days. It’s a bad choice by the way. You lose out on millions. Imagine if that doubling object was a labor producing robot instead of a penny. Compounding labor. It’s actually crazy if you try and wrap your mind around it. So Elon mentions Universl High Income and the midwits flip a lid. “The elites won’t share” You don’t get it. They won’t need to share. They will make everything so cheap, it is effectively free. Charities will have immense resources to distribute. Unfathomable intelligence will exist to help optimize production and distribution. An unfathomably large labor pool will exist that operates on solar power exclusively. The public work projects that are erected will be unseen before levels of breathtaking. I think we are incredibly blessed to steward this new age of abundance. Can you see it now? Can you see the future?
