@Local_Origins1 Yeah it’s super annoying and it’s probably only done so that the finders of the fossil get to erect their own species and be on the cover of Nature. No one wants to find the one thousandth afarensis mandible

@Local_Origins1 Neandertals have such similar morphology across space&time they are probably the best candidate for a paleospecies and yet we bred with them. I think after 2010 every academic has allowed for the possibility of interbreeding between any two contemporaneous “species” bc of this

@Local_Origins1 Yeah definitely no consensus and it seems to depend highly on just like personal temperament (are you a lumper or a splitter). I like when people don’t even use species names and only refer to specimen IDs

@Local_Origins1 There are >30 ways to define species but biological species (can produce fertile offspring) is most common. Since we can’t know anything about reproduction of extinct species we use the term “paleospecies” which is defined as similar in morphology, geography, and time

@Local_Origins1 @Phillip05166897 Neandertal introgression dates are pretty certain. >50k Asia&Oceania was late erectus/denisovan that mostly died out with some absorbed into Homo sapiens. None of these are necessarily hills I’ll die on but seems to be where the evidence points
