I can’t believe that it’s one year since my Mum passed away. We’re going to gather tomorrow on her grave. My uncle, my aunt, cousins and some of her friends. Mummy’s grave is next to my Daddy’s. Dad passed away in November 2015. Please, excuse me if I’m rude sometimes

Nick Timothy and Nigel Farage are right, and Sadiq Khan and Keir Starmer are wrong. Small groups of people, of whatever religion, praying in public places is fine. And as a Christian country we should allow a special privilege for churches to lead services in our national spaces, like the Palm Sunday celebration that happens in Trafalgar Square. What we don't want is mass ritual observances intended to claim the civic realm for another religion, or assert the domination of another culture over our own Christian traditions. What happens in our national spaces is not neutral. People use Trafalgar Square, for celebrations and demonstrations, to make a point about the kind of country they want us to be. The Palm Sunday pageant reminds us of who we are - not as individuals (many or most of us don't identify as Christians at all) but as a national community, with the roots of our institutions in the ground of the Bible and our most solemn communal moments, from coronations to funerals, mediated through the liturgies of the Church. A mass Adhan held there, or in any town square, is making a different point: that Britain is not a Christian country, and that - inshallah - one day it shall be Muslim. This is unacceptable to the British public and indeed incompatible with our constitution. As ever with these debates, the issue is partly one of kind and partly one of degree. There is an issue with Islam itself as a religion which in most interpretations does not admit of pluralism or freedom of conscience, and therefore is inherently aggrandising, including over territory. But with a bit of confidence and a bit of toleration we could handle that - if it were not for the issue of degree. It is the scale of Islam in Britain, and the ambition of its leaders for greater scale, that makes the problem. The numbers of people who assembled for the adhan in Trafalgar Square, clearly and openly claiming the territory for a faith with no connection (indeed, with strong doctrinal disagreement) with the model of Western liberal democracy that Britain has developed and exported to the world - that is the problem. The numbers, whether everyone there understood it this way or not (and I suspect many did), convey an explicit threat to the foundations of our country. Being relaxed about other people's religion is a good thing, a very British thing. I don't mind modern druids dancing around Stonehenge in my constituency (arguably, though the historicity is tenuous, they have a claim to the place). I don't mind small groups of Hindus or Buddhists or Muslims demonstrating the reality of Britain's religious toleration by worshiping in Trafalgar Square. But let's not kid ourselves about this adhan, or pretend that we're just seeing another harmless expression of Britain's religious diversity. We are seeing an abuse of liberalism, led by people who are not themselves liberal; or - let us imagine they are acting in good faith - who are themselves deceived about what they are doing. It should not happen again. And it would be good to hear the Church of England say so.

@JonathanPieNews Thought she was in Dubai where everything's so much better. Or did she take a repatriation flight because they've suddenly started firing missiles in her direction and - shock horror - freedom-of-speech laws mean she can't photograph them? One contradiction/lie after another.

@RhonddaBryant Obvs. Which isn't a full endorsement of Uschi: she is also flawed and relies far too much on a tiny circle of advisors who aren't as clever as they think they are (#BjörnSchlaftabletteSeibert), but surely no-one serious could possibly prefer Trump?

@MyArrse I had no idea HMRC were so efficient. The war only started 3 weeks ago. For once I'm impressed with the UK's administration. Hope someone charged these tax dodgers for their plane trip home (hope they didn't get business class either).

British expats fleeing the Gulf War are being hit with huge tax bills after returning to UK. HMRC is hitting them with unexpected Capital Gains Tax after falling foul of UK’s five‑year temporary non‑residency rule, which is an anti-tax avoidance measure. uk.yahoo.com/news/british-e…

@UKStandards_ @nw_nicholas 'Nigel' is an MP and draws an MP's salary. But he doesn't do any of the work of an MP. That's the scandal. And, by the way, your post is illiterate, but why does that surprise me?

Nigel is a reporter and news reader. He’s also yes a politician and he’s also a reporter for GB News. The left have BBCI TV Sky News any other new source out there the right have GB News so why can’t they you have the BBC? I could say why isn’t BBC News not reporting on the government mishandling of Peter Mandelson and the corruption minister and the mishandling of Starmer’s government but they’re not. They’re interested Iran not the UK. At least GB News reports on the things that happened in Britain more than other countries. You just don’t like the truth GB News shows the truth you’re clearly a lefty. Ofcom could be investigating what the BBC did to Trump and what they did to the general at the Department of war where they cropped his speech but nothing has been said they could be working on actual real things and are not fake reports like yours 🤣🫵

@MichaelTakeMP I do hope Dean the Paperboy doesn't accost you too early in the morning, Sir M. That sort of language would ruin my day before the last night's sherbet water had worn off. Is there a way of checking if his ankle tag is still working?

I must admit I do like the new Reform UK manifesto: ‘WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG NO NO NO NO NO NO!’ It’s catchy isn’t it? Bit like one of those wrap songs. 🎤🎵 DJ U-Turn is in da house & layin down sum fat off grooves! (As Dean our Paperboy would say…) 🙈

If I'd thought the ****ing scammers couldn't sink any lower - now they have now done deep fake ads with a supposed video of my wife @LaraLewington being beaten up by an 'immigrant' as he was refused entry to 'Martin Lewis' Quantum AI' investment scheme as it isn't for 'outsiders'. We've had worried messages from friends. Social media firms have no problem taking money to publish this offensive, fake, organised criminals attempts to rip people off! Clearly if you see these please report them. Yet I have no faith in any of these firms to clear up this crap as they're earning too much. And the implementation of the scam ads rules in the Online Safety Act keep being delayed and delayed.

@edwinhayward Really hard to know what to do about PR these days. I used to want it very much but if we had it now it would allow Reform in big time. And UK politicians are simply not grown up enough to deal with multiparty coalitions and the compromise they require.

Blue Labour as a concept needs to go in the bin, alongside the idea of Lexit. Cut those twin cancers out. Brexit should go on the scrap heap of history. FPTP has had its day too. Roll on PR, and a full-throated and unashamed campaign to negotiate with the EU to rejoin ASAP.

@Eddystone506 @kellro36 Building Control has been our nightmare. 1st Assent folded so we signed with appalling imho Alpha, sent in docs by their deadline & they dumped us saying they lacked capacity to process them. Now reverted to LABC. Only 1 more inspection but basically starting from scratch again.
