I’ve always encouraged my kids to show up for Charlie Kirk’s talks whenever they mentioned he was coming to their campuses. In today’s world, a 31-year-old with deep political knowledge and sharp debating skills isn’t all that rare anymore. But Kirk stood out for his authentic passion and unwavering principles. Folks who couldn’t hold their own against him in discussion would frequently bail on the event in a huff—either stumped by his arguments or unwilling to confront ideas that clashed with their own. Still, I spot a real crisis cutting across the political divide, from conservatives to progressives: far too many folks won’t even give the opposition a fair hearing. In a truly civil society, we don’t erupt into fights—or anything more extreme—just because we disagree on issues. Lately, though, we’ve turned more aggressive and crude overall, and I have to own up that both camps share the responsibility. With a nuance, of course: the left often resorts to outright physical aggression, while the right leans into public shaming and character attacks.

We are not the same.
