🤖 Meta (= Facebook) announced a new "language model" today, trained on millions of scientific papers. Judging from examples in the HN discussion, it's hilariously bad. Language models should model language, not "knowledge." news.ycombinator.com/item?id=336112…

I asked #Galactica about some things I know about and I'm troubled. In all cases, it was wrong or biased but sounded right and authoritative. I think it's dangerous. Here are a few of my experiments and my analysis of my concerns. (1/9)

@trvrb @gingraslab1 Here is a cool study using the CDC influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance data to estimate the number of "extra" doctor visits of people with influenza-like symptoms: medrxiv.org/content/10.110… Estimated detection rate is 0.75% (i.e. true infection rates are 100-fold higher)

How can we assess the total number of #SARSCoV2 infections that have occurred up to this point? As others have noted, it's not easy to extrapolate from confirmed cases to total infections. Some thoughts here, but no real answers. 1/9
