Hey @CaitlinDoornbos, it’s been lovely seeing your posts highlighting the many wonderful things Pakistan has to offer, especially the incredible warmth and hospitality of its people. I understand that access to government officials is important for any journalist. But so is a commitment to reporting the full, objective picture. While you were there covering the Iran-U.S. talks, I hope you were also able to observe the deeply constrained and suffocating state of journalism in Pakistan. Setting aside the controversy around the event you referenced, I hope that through @Matiullahjan919 and others present, you caught at least a glimpse of the pressures journalists face. Those who dare to challenge the current regime risk harassment, detention, prosecution on dubious charges, and even murder, often with little recourse. It’s an environment that makes independent reporting extraordinarily difficult and being a true journalist extremely dangerous. Had you reported on this repression while on the ground, it’s likely your access, or even your stay, would have been cut short by Pakistan’s intelligence agencies. That reality, in itself, is telling (recommended reading: The Nine Lives of Pakistan, Declan Walsh) As a journalist, one would hope you’ll extend your voice and solidarity to Pakistan’s embattled and endangered media community, if not while there, then upon your return. ps: If you need reading material for your long flight back home, I'd suggest reading the latest reports on Pakistan by the Committee to Protect Journalists
