@AdrienneLaF the monster at the end of this book. only grover could demo to the reader over & over that they are behaving... monstrously, let the reader off the hook at the end out of pity by saying *grover's* been the monster all along, and then facepalm in embarrassment at having done so

In 1996 an episode of The X Files titled Pusher aired & traumatized me so hard that 27 years later the words “cerulean blue” still give me a chill. If you are capable of doing that to someone with just the lil story in your head you deserve to get paid. Pay the writers.

My biggest language learning hack once you get past the beginner level is to spend a lot of time reading Wikipedia articles in the language you want to learn, on a very niche subject you know a lot about in your native language.

gm to the tiktok lady who said the myth of Sisyphus is about the value of having a good daily routine and that Sisyphus is happy because he is getting more swole every time he pushes the boulder up. my brain gets hot like an old laptop thinking about it

A phrase back in the day from Marginal Revolution which colored the rest of my perception of reality: “production function.” The thing is the thing, but the who/where/what/how that caused the thing to exist in the world is important, too, and determines a lot about the thing.

@nikitabier yeah the temptation (to which i myself succumbed in the past) to think it'll increase signal/noise and therefore increase signal volume is delusion. all you get is decreased everything.

Subgroups should be completely off the table for new products and the absolute last resort for mature products. Sometimes your urge to fragment your content is your own anxiety to keep things organized: resist this urge.

There is a tendency for app designers to create layers & subgroups to deal with complexity: Mastodon attempts this with usernames—which have 2 parts. For every part of your app that you fragment, expect to increase your app’s overall probability of failure by 50%.

Paradox 1) Europe is continuing its technological export to Russia 2) This export is keeping the Russian military industrial complex afloat 3) So the Russian army has enough armaments to continue the war 4) ... that is rapidly impoverishing Europe What else can I say?

@SarkarRohan1 @rajkapania I'm not sure I can name other movies with Double Indemnity-level dialogue! But some unusual noirs I found really interesting were the cross-genre noirs: Western noir (Bad Day at Black Rock), Gothic noir (The House on Telegraph Hill), true crime noir (Call Northside 777).

I am observing an online community where the consensus seems to be that Likes are bad. I think likes are gestures like a nod or a smile. Not a huge deal, but I really miss the, when they’re not there.
