Progress in Biology Is Slow - Here's How We Can Speed It Up Why aren't we living forever? I wrote about why this problem still exists and what the solution is. Hint: we're gonna need a lot of mice adamashwal.com/irreducible

Best demo reaction to date: *Sees personlized demo* *Physically does a full body emote* *Proceeds to yell out - "I just got tickled inside"* Needless to say, we're helping them automate their truck assembly now

Confused why more industrial software companies don’t give away machine monitoring for free If you solve integration, this shouldn’t cost the customer money. Just download the app onto the machine.

My team is building the world model for factories. We're controlling heavy machinery, robots, sensors across the US. Right now it's Starcraft: humans in control, optimizing assets via our command center. Next step: AI in-the-loop I'm hiring DS/ML/whatever - dm me
danny@itsdannypereira

Fleetglue began as the easiest way to manage fleets of mobile robots - today we take the next step with Conduit. Our factory command center is deployed across the US - AMRs, CNCs, cameras, sensors all monitored and controlled from a single platform. A 🧵 on what we've built:

@kamens @kenbwork I suppose I see software engineers as the equivalent of lab techs in your analogy; doing custom work that can’t be outsourced (specific configurations of tools, surrounding code, etc). I agree this is exacerbated by the lack of composability and it being atoms

@interwound @kenbwork These long tail exceptions are true when building “typical” tech/software on cloud, too. Difference is it’s easy to connect some custom, non-AWS/GCS tool into some step in your cloud workflow. Bio experiments aren’t (de)composable. Requires full coverage.

Cloud wet labs don't work yet and probably won't for a while. Many focus on the market, but the issue is hardware. The way we reason about, design and execute experiments will completely change as constituent measurement devices jump in throughput, assay more things and remove "human glue" by moving molecules + cells around with lithography etched electrodes. You don't need PCR if you can move a single molecule of RNA directly next to a single cell with precision. Building a cloud lab today is equivalent to standing up a datacenter in 1986 with 80386s and 10MB SCSI drives, and wondering where the demand is while network bandwidth is choked sharding an object across 16K machines I can comfortably fit in my laptop memory today.

Huh. One of the ways gastric bypass surgeries have been proposed to cause weight loss is through stimulating GLP-1 production. But apparently they cause just as much weight loss in rats without working GLP-1 receptors.

Something people don't fully understand: AlphaGo only went super-human once they *removed* the human data Even expert-human data made the model slower and learn worse strategies Human data is a *blocker* to anything super-human

@realsaadasad @zennonuc Is it intractable to get the conservatives in OC on board? It feels to me like upzoning around transit would have minimal impact in the wealthy coastal areas, and de-regulating zoning would (ostensibly) be a con value

@interwound @zennonuc LA is more suburban than SF with less middle class transit usage. Also, the YIMBY movement is stronger and older in the Bay; some local electeds are even unabashedly YIMBY.

Fascinating to see the stark rural/urban and north/south divide on #SB79, the biggest housing bill of the year. Let’s dive into the details, and see how your State Senator voted. 👇

@zennonuc Is there a sense that the bay area strategy can be copy-pasted onto LA? I could imagine the recent successes could negatively polarize groups in LA, making it harder

@interwound IMO groups in the Bay have done a better job at organizing and being an electoral force. LA tried a left-approach to get prog orgs into housing (which i would prefer), versus the Bay aligned themselves with mods. and sadly it’s clear the latter is a more effective coalition
