hey metagenomics folks, an update: thanks to several astute users, we found and fixed some bugs in KrakenUniq. Get the latest (0.7.3) at github.com/fbreitwieser/k…. I've got it running on my iMac, where I was able to use a 345GB database even though the Mac has just 32GB of RAM

Metagenomics folks: you no longer need a large-RAM computer to run Kraken! KrakenUniq has a new option that will automatically break your database into manageable pieces 1/2 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@phylogenomics More oddly IMHO, higher GRE male students are more likely to drop out of PhD. Re: diversity, I didn't comparisons of GRE's fairness issues w/ those of subjective assessments (letters/interview) whose weight increases when GRE is dropped 4/4

@phylogenomics This may explain why GREs do not correlate w/ outcomes, even if one accepts the intuition that they should. Despite suffering from the same confounding issues, recommenders' scores are still predictive of PhD publication productivity & GRE is predictive of 1st-semester grades 3/n
