@TS_Secrets @NancyRPearcey Want to comment on how the unions or states ratio the open journeyman opportunities and how in many western states, the odds of getting an apprenticeship are lower than getting into a highly selective university?

My friend got laid off from his software engineering job in 2022. 42 years old. $195k salary gone overnight. Meta, Google, and Amazon had just cut 200,000 jobs and the market was flooded with engineers. He spent 14 months in an electrical apprenticeship. Last year he made $160k as a journeyman electrician specializing in data center builds. 2026 at 46 years old he make $270k with over time. The same data centers his former employer runs. He told me he will never work for anyone who can lay him off with a Zoom call again. Neither would I. Day 97 tagging @mikeroweworks because I want to bring awareness to the trades.

@GeorgeSchroeder @dandarling You are not wrong. But on this issue, many find similar caps that were put into place in other area. The state either apprentices-ratios them or the unions cap them.

@jmyeats @dandarling To be fair -- and you know I love your state -- it's a crazy state.

College isn't for everyone, to be sure. But a good college education is more than mere credential for the place you get your paycheck. It's formation, it's curated learning from the best in their field, it's develping habits that stick with you for a lifetime. It's learning how to learn. It's a bridge from adolescence to adulthood.

@dandarling More fun? In my state, the apprenticeship programs are incentivized with $$$ to make a certain number of those limited slots only for those recently leaving prison. So the kid who did construction trades in High School doesn’t have a shot at getting anywhere.
