My dad went to a job he disliked every single day, with a 90-minute commute each way, for decades, because it provided the stability and finances for our family to thrive. Now that I'm grown, I make sure he knows how much I appreciate what he sacrificed.

That's right. The public health experts lost trust by a) pursuing maximalist policies that ignored high social costs b) inconsistency on gathering in the face of pressure from left-wing groups c) an arrogant "trust the science" that confused data with personal opinion

It was entirely reasonable to ask Americans to follow public health advice during a pandemic, even though some of it was bound to be wrong. But humility about how little we knew for sure should have led to a lot less coercive government action.

Great opportunity for one of the best thinkers and conversationalists of our age. Douthat will be irreplaceable at the Times. What made him good there is his ability to translate conservative ideas to liberal audiences while also interrogating his own beliefs.
