I've talked to 3 different people in just the last week who all said their big company is pushing AI fast. i.e. they expect more people to be laid off soon due to AI. I've gotten aggressive in the past 2 months and it has dramatically changed how I work. In a good...Great way. KPMG is laying off 10% of their audit partners. You might have missed the news amidst today’s announcement that Meta is also laying off 10% of their employees. I’ll be blunt: If you work in front of a computer, your job isn’t safe. It doesn’t matter how senior you are (KPMG’s partners literally own the company). Nor does it matter how good you are at your job (Meta’s engineers are among the best of the best in the tech industry). Your job is at risk, and it’s incumbent on you—and no one but yourself—to plan for what you do in your career to proactively manage that risk. Four reasons why this is happening: 1. Competition: AI is reducing barriers to entry across every industries, from professional services (such as the audit and advisory services provided by the likes of KPMG) to software and everything in between. Reduced barriers to entry mean increased competition, which means lower pricing power, margin compression, and pressure to reduce costs—especially fixed costs such as labor, which is the number one expense for most white-collar businesses. 2. Need to Invest: As incumbents face increased competition from new entrants to their market and from substitute products (e.g., vibe-coded homebrew SaaS replacing expensive vertical SaaS products that previously enjoyed virtual monopolies within their respective target markets), they are forced to make sizable investments in technology to remain competitive. In the case of professional services companies, this means large investments in proprietary software (all of the Big Four firms are investing billions in new technology right now); for big tech companies, this means tens of billions of dollars going into data centers and physical infrastructure. Essentially, capex and opex are in the middle of a zero-sum battle in corporate budgets. As companies face the need to invest more in capex and R&D—and as capital markets become increasingly averse to providing them additional liquidity to fund it, out of concerns that the ROIC on said capex will not be accretive to earnings—opex is cannibalized to fund capex. And, again, the primary lever CFOs in white-collar companies have to instantly reduce opex is layoffs. 3. Automation: These competitive pressures are compounded by AI rapidly automating work faster than incremental revenue is able to be generated. In other words, workers are being made redundant faster than companies are able to come up with the new business that might otherwise save those jobs. Some in the tech industry (people far smarter than me, I will add) conjecture that, on a net basis, AI will create more jobs than it will destroy, due to an AI-facilitated period of hypergrowth and a corresponding boom in corporate earnings. But with every company I advise, across the worlds of startups, SMBs, and large industrial companies, I’m simply not seeing that yet, and I don’t know anyone who is. 4. It might feel like ancient history at this point, but many companies are still dealing with the excesses of the Covid-era labor market. Money was loose, talent was in short supply, and software companies, financial services firms, and professional services companies hired too many people too fast, with standards that were too low. They’ve made significantly progress in right-sizing their workforces over the past couple years (return-to-office mandates, for example, have essentially created “soft layoffs” at many large companies), but much work still remains. If you’re picturing your career and your company as you read these words, I can’t emphasize it enough: Plan ahead. Build a network of people outside your company who would want to work with you if your current job were made redundant. Think about businesses you might want to start (it’s a lot easier to keep your job if no one but your customers can terminate you). Set money aside. Be proactive, not reactive. Be a predator, not the prey. Because these trends are inexorable, they’re unstoppable, and, chances are, they’re coming for all of us. Start planning. And start planning now.

I’m not a Taylor Swift hater, but when you hear these classic songs you question whether or not her discography will stand the test of time. She’s very commercially successful and has broken records. But I don’t think her music will have the same cultural impact as legends like ABBA, Michael Jackson and others who we still listen to 50 years later.

As an 8u coach, you can definitely prep the kids better than other teams, etc But at 8u theres a lot of luck Luck of is your best player wanting to be there Bases loaded, does the team hit it to the terrible kid in RF or to the best player at SS There's so many variables that taking it seriously is dumb

Great points, Jacob. I teach my 8U team that none of us will remember the score of the game we're going to play... but we'll remember the fun we had we each other If we can keep them having fun, they'll want to practice more, come back... come during spring break and play while others are on the beach etc. It starts with connecting with everyone on the team as that's what brings them back

I spent 11 years as a pro athlete, and today I coach my 8-year-old. A few things I believe about youth sports... Most kids will never play college sports. Even fewer will earn money from playing their sports. Yet everyone can experience life lessons through sports. Now, to do that, it requires you, me, and everyone involved to understand the stakes. The stakes? Well, there are none. Ya, the 8u tournament where the coach lost his mind on a call by a 14-year-old umpire. The play your first basemen didn't make that he should have. The game you lost because the coach put the players in the "wrong positions". None of that matters, and understanding that...well, those are the stakes. You see, kids are incredible at watching, repeating, and forming habits. As a coach and parent, my goal is pretty simple. *Teach them the game *Make sure they enjoy it *Show them how to live with the results The most common pitfall I see in youth sports today is the excuse train. The umpire made a bad call. The coach feeds into it, the players follow along. The one player missed the easy play. The coach yells, the players feed into it. The team had a run of bad luck. The coach makes excuses, the players think that is ok. My friends, youth sports is a tool to teach your boys and girls about life. That's it... For the select few that will go on and play college or pro, good on them. Chances are that isn't my kids or your kids. So our job? To make sure they understand what is important and that we remember the stakes.

People don’t want kids because they don’t want them. The opportunity cost - fun, entertainment, enjoyable easy life - is too high. Any other explanation they give you (financial, “climate emergency”, “state of the world”) is post-rationalization. People who want kids have them.

Right on cue - just now, right in front of my eyes at a Duane Reade in Manhattan: A guy casually grabs a bunch of candy and heads for the door. One of the employees follows him, stops, and says, “Do good.” The guy responds, “Who the #%$ are you?” and tries to intimidate him. He walks out. The employee turns around and says to a colleague: “I wish I could just knock him out.” If you want to see this happen again and again, go hang out inside a CVS or Duane Reade in Manhattan And yes things are locked up because otherwise they would get easily stolen with zero consequences. Yes this is reality, and the majority don’t seem to want to see it changed. One of the mysteries of life.

This High School baseball coach sounds like has his hands full. I feel for him. He kicked this senior off the baseball team. Listen to the senior laugh and then try to degrade the coach. When asked why he was kicked off he said the reason was they took him out of the game (for who knows what) and they didn’t speak to him about it. So, he got on his phone in the dugout and was texting with his mom telling her to not bother to come to the game. Everyone knows you aren’t to be on your phone in high school during a game. Just by listening to the student and also the fact the coach had an officer present, I can tell what I already need to know. Sounds like the coach is trying to turn a program around. Do you think the coach made the right decision? Context is everything I know, but listening to him, can’t you kind of gather what the issue is? Who thinks this is exactly what is wrong with our younger generation?
