I am excited to announce I am starting the @mat_capital (MatCap) incubator, where we go deep with a handful of founders to help them build exceptional companies. This first batch is 100% AZ focused, although future batches may not be. My focus is to find generational founders who want to raise venture capital and give them the network, community, and context to do that from great firms. Why: There is a lot of business-building help in Phoenix, but when it comes to raising proper capital, we come up empty-handed for support. My background over the last six years has been in the VC space, and it lends well to helping founders who want to go down the funding path from day one. I’ve helped connect dozens of local founders to investors, including facilitating whole rounds with local and coastal firms. I now want to package that up as a program so the founders get the cohort benefit as well. How: I am not going to pretend like I am a business-building wizard. I am not. My lane is fundraising. So this program will be focused on getting funded. This will include a combo of office hours with me, with founders gut-checking what they need to do to become fundable, making intro requests once they are fundable, and giving them a founder community in the meantime to lean on and learn from, because this process is not easy to do alone. What: This first cohort will run about three months. We’ll host a weekly lunch with a cool guest, giving the cohort a chance to get to know each other and form peer bonds, which cannot be more important, as well as meet a VIP every week that they can learn from. I will keep a close one-on-one relationship with each founder, and when one is ready, I will open up my rolodex of a few local investors and hundreds of investors based in SF and NYC and work them them through the raise. We do not charge cash, but there is a small equity commitment to partake (1%), with terms (vesting/cliff) that vary company by company. If you think you have everything you need to raise capital from tier-one investors, feel free to skip. Yet, I have found very few local founders have access to the best investors in the world and instead settle for what is within 25 miles of them or working with a tier-two accelerator, which is worse than working with no program. By working with me, you broaden your horizons, brand, and context to raise from a plethora of people. To be clear, I am pro our local investor community. But as a founder, it's your job to widen your top of funnel. By not focusing outside of AZ for raising, you are going to raise less, on a lower valuation, with less leverage. With me, you get leverage. The batch kicks off February 4th with our first lunch with a local founder who was part of the first Thiel Fellowship class.
