Allow me to reintroduce myself.

The @UMich Law Library is insane. Above ground it's a 1931 Gothic reading room modeled after King's College Chapel at Cambridge. Below ground it's a 3 story modernist library with mirrored light trenches that pull sunlight underground. By the 70s they had 4x the books the building could hold. But the Law Quad was the architectural crown of campus. Every detail had been personally overseen by the donor. Altering it was a non-starter. So architect Gunnar Birkerts just... dug. Architectural Record called it 'the most esthetically satisfying underground building to have penetrated American soil.'
