If you thought the story of Leonard Casley, the Australian wheat farmer who declared his farm an independent country (the one I posted earlier), was bizarre, you haven’t heard of the Soviet pilot who stole his country’s most secretive fighter jet and flew it straight to the enemy. His name was Viktor Belenko. He was a 29-year-old lieutenant in the Soviet Air Force, stationed at a remote air base near Vladivostok in the far east of the Soviet Union. He had become disillusioned with communism, his marriage was failing, and he had been quietly planning his escape for months. The plane he flew was the MiG-25 Foxbat. At the time, the West knew almost nothing about it except that it could fly faster than any other fighter on earth. The United States had spent years and billions of dollars designing the F-15 fighter purely to counter it. American military intelligence considered the Foxbat the single biggest mystery in Soviet military aviation. On the 6th of September 1976, Belenko took off on what was supposed to be a routine training flight. Twenty minutes in, he broke away from his formation, dropped his altitude to evade Soviet radar, and flew east toward the ocean. He didn’t stop. He flew over 400 miles into Japanese airspace and landed at a small civilian airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The runway was too short for a MiG-25. He overshot it by about 240 metres, hit some equipment, and skidded to a stop just before a fence. He climbed out, fired two warning shots from his pistol into the air to keep curious bystanders away from the plane, and asked for political asylum in the United States. He had brought the pilot’s manual with him. The next six weeks were the largest intelligence operation of the Cold War. The Americans dismantled the plane bolt by bolt and discovered the West had been wrong about almost everything. The Foxbat was fast, but heavy and poorly armed. It couldn’t manoeuvre. The F-15, designed in panic to counter it, was vastly better. Years of Western military planning had been built around a phantom. The Soviets demanded their plane back. The Japanese said yes, eventually. They returned it disassembled in 30 wooden crates and sent it home on a cargo ship. Japan sent the Soviet Union a bill for 40,000 US dollars for storage and the damage Belenko had done to the airport. The Soviets sent Japan a bill for 10 million US dollars for the damage the Americans had done to the plane. Neither bill was ever paid. Viktor Belenko was given asylum, American citizenship, and a quiet life. He changed his last name to Schmidt and worked for years as a consultant for the US military. He passed away in 2023 at a nursing home in the American state of Illinois, aged 76. The Soviet Union had spread rumours throughout his life that he had been killed, returned home, or executed. None of it was true. He had simply lived. A book about his defection, called MiG Pilot, was published in 1980 with his cooperation.

Bonus: After Belenko's defection the Soviet airforce greatly limited the amount of fuel pilots received for their missions in order to avoid further cases like his. In 1983, when a Korean Airlines Boeing 747 passenger plane entered Soviet airspace by mistake, this proved fatal: The dwindling fuel reserves of the fighter plane sent to investigate the unidentified intruder meant that the Soviets had to decide in a hurry whether to shoot it down or not. They decide to fire at the jet, causing it to crash and killing all 269 people aboard.

@GuGi263 My theory is the puppies want milk and their teeth at this stage are very sharp and when they suck the nipples of the mama dog, it leaves the scar and it's painful. The puppies are ganging up to drink the milk & the pain multiplies so mama dog is scolding to stop it. Thats it.

This is Diesel 💔 A life of pain written all over his body… A rope wound cutting deep into his neck, a damaged tail, severe dehydration, ticks and fleas covering him… and even an additional opening from an old untreated wound. This is what the streets do. This is what survival looks like. No care. No treatment. No mercy. He kept walking, kept suffering, kept surviving… until he reached us. Now Diesel is safe, but his healing has just begun. His treatment will be long, intensive, and very costly. If anyone can sponsor his treatment, you can truly save his life. Street life is not life… it is slow suffering. And there are so many like him still out there, waiting for help that may never come. Please stand with Diesel. Help us give him the care he desperately needs and help us save others like him. Even £5 and a share can make a miracle happen. 💳 PayPal: paypal.me/TAWFUK ❤️ Construction GoFundMe: gofundme.com/f/tawf-sanctua… 🔗 Linktree: linktr.ee/tahiraanimalwe…

#Thread Expose : As Pakistan’s Information Minister @TararAttaullah and the @ForeignOfficePk claim Pakistan has “nothing to do” with terror activities in India. We are going to expose how, inside Pakistan’s terror ecosystem, terrorists are not just protected, they are rewarded, promoted and institutionalised. A key example is @MuftiAbidShb now the head of Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Jamia-ud-Dawa seminary in Muridke, which has been under the control of the Government of Pakistan since 2019. (1/n)

A man was arrested Friday afternoon for allegedly trying to drown a dog in the ocean near Miami Beach, arrest documents said. Yerko Ivan Mendoza-Patino, 37, is currently facing several charges, including animal cruelty with the intent to injure or kill, providing false identification to law enforcement, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, WFOR reported. According to the arrest documents, Miami Beach Ocean Rescue lifeguards notified Miami Beach Police and Fire Rescue around 3:25 p.m. of a man seen drowning a dog in the area of the 300 block of the beach. Once officers arrived, they saw the man - later identified as Mendoza-Patino - dragging a white pit bull into the ocean, putting the dog's head underwater "several times" as he walked deeper into the water.
