Finally finished Dog’s memorial. I’m very happy to have him back and very pleased with how he turned out. I’m going to add a few extras to his memorial eventually, but it’s mostly completed. 🩵

Finished half of this pet memorial commission for @Felis_Tyria! His other bones still have to be cleaned but his skull is done 😊

Boiling is a common yet very outdated method of cleaning bones. While it looks like it cleans and whitens them, it does NOT get all of the flesh off, cakes the grease right back inside of the bone, and heavily brittles/weakens them. Degreasing takes forever but is the proper way.

Decided to clean these guys myself. Suspicions confirmed, they were disgusting. Besides the caked in grease from the mass producer lazily boiling them, they were still littered flesh and brain matter and were shattering from fragility. Be careful who you buy from.

If you are trying to find out where taxidermy was sourced, don’t ask if it was “ethically sourced.” Simply just ask where it was sourced from. Everyone has their own morals when it comes to that, so you will never get an exact mutually agreed upon answer.

In the community there are quite a few things that the majority agree on. Most vultures believe that hunting only for trophies and letting the rest of the animal go to waste is unethical. Most people do not agree with farmed foxes. However, it is still not an 100% answer.

Ethical doesn’t immediately equal “not from a fur farm”, as some people think it’s ethical and the same as farming livestock. Ask where it was specifically sourced instead so you have the exact answer you want! Do your own research and make sure you’re getting what YOU want.

This is why it is so important to degrease your bones properly!! These are three skulls I was gifted a few years ago. They were pure white when I got them. They were most likely quickly boiled, which cakes the grease right back into them, leading to it slowly resurfacing.
