I worked for a criminal law firm in the early 2000s. At that time, networks (Vodafone, Orange, O2, etc.) routinely stored:
full SMS message bodies
timestamps
sender/recipient numbers
And they could disclose them under:
a court order, or
a law enforcement request, or
(in some jurisdictions) a defence advocate’s request supported by judicial authority
We were able to obtain complete transcripts, even if the messages had been deleted from the devices.
Data retention reforms changed everything, and not for the better in my opinion.
