“Journeying is a constant theme of the Christmas Story. The Holy Family made a journey to Bethlehem and arrived homeless without proper shelter. The Wise Men made a pilgrimage from the East to worship at the cradle of Christ; and the Shepherds journeyed from field to town in search of Jesus, the Saviour of the World. In each case, they journeyed with others; and relied on the companionship and kindness of others.”
In this year’s Christmas Broadcast or ‘King’s Speech’, His Majesty reflects on the theme of the journey, in religious life and more broadly. You can now watch in full on:
- The Royal Family Channel on YouTube.
- @BBCNews, @ITV and @SkyUK in the UK.
- If you live outside the UK, check your national broadcaster’s schedule.

FADM Chester Nimitz believed the U.S was fortunate that the attack on Pearl Harbor came as a surprise. Had the U.S. known of the approaching Japanese fleet, the American fleet would have been sent to intercept it and then been entirely lost to a superior force. #PearlHarborDay

This morning I gave a call to action at my International Sea Power Conference.
I'm really looking forward to discussing how we are going to sustain our warfighting advantage, building on the blocks that we have already put in place.
It's going to be a good day.

Never underestimate the power of a well designed building to imbue confidence, purpose and ethos in to a workforce. This is the fabulous @DartmouthBRNC
where the @RoyalNavy trains its officers.

‘But the British, who had beaten [the Nazis], had so little use for boasting that they did not mind if their children mislaid their flag and could not sing their anthem. Parades and demonstrations meant so little to them that they did without them, even on the day of the greatest victory in history.
These peaceable and informal people, with quiet determination and a minimum of fuss, had defeated the bullies and braggarts. They had done so without vanity and without hatred’.
Georgy Kantor@GeorgyKantor
I always found this bit of memoir by the late Tom Braun of Merton (a child refugee from the Nazis) an exceptionally touching one: the British spirit one felt an immediate sympathy for by comparison with the Soviet block, too.
