Super excited to share the second paper utilizing our repeated social defeat model in prairie voles! This time we looked at how SSRI or oxytocin (OXT) treatment affected social behavior and neurobiology following defeat in BOTH sexes. A short thread... (1/7)
Real Vole Facts@SmithLabKU

New article from our lab highlights a sexual convergence of the neurobiology of social anxiety in prairie voles. Chronic schedule of oxytocin reduced stress in females but its complicated. 👀 Great work from Luanne Hale & @mariatickerhoof @ELSneuroscience sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Under acute #stress some get demotivated, while others full of energy. It depends on our trait #anxiety and CRHR1 system New paper out from the lab, led by @zalachoras with great contributions from all authors & collab with J Deussing @mpi_psychiatry science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
NCCR-Synapsy@NSynapsy

Individuals can respond to #stress in diametrically opposed ways. A @NSynapsy study by @carmensandi10 shows that the behavioral response depends on the level of #anxiety and identifies the cerebral mechanisms involved. nccr-synapsy.ch/news/14219/ @EPFL_en

@SmithLabKU Takes quite a bit of practice to be able to pull that off while recording with the other hand.

@trainorlab @wmkenkel Definitely some species differences, as our voles use cob bedding and we don't see any sex differences in social approach following defeat with the test we use, at least. This work has been on my radar though and it's something I always try to keep in mind.

Rodent bedding and phytoestrogen issue: I currently use Beta Chips (wood) and my vet staff would like to switch to Corn Cob. I was worried about phytoE so I asked for a profile. Turns out cob actually has less?

@lawrencelibrary I don't use the library as often as I'd like to, but it really warms my heart knowing there's kids in my area that are growing up under difficult circumstances but still get to use the library. ♥️

@lawrencelibrary There aren't words to describe how happy this move has made me. Growing up I loved books, but never got to go to the library because my single mother returned a stack of books very late and racked up $30 in late fees, and couldn't afford to pay it back.

@MEOrive @UnivOfKansas Oh great. I thought I heard that kick on. Bad news is I think our -80 isn't on backup so hopefully it gets resolved sooner rather than later...

@wmkenkel if this applies to voles as well (as I imagine it would) it definitely would explain a lot.

1.5 yrs of 24/7 home-cage activity recording in 60 mice revealed a circannual oscillation in spontaneous activity, 65% higher during peak than trough, with a season-like periodicity, in C57 mice kept under constant conditions. Could explain a lot 👀 nature.com/articles/s4159…

@BenSaunders @Memery_87 I don't know, according to them it was based on "feedback from poster presenters to improve networking." So did the feedback ask for this kind of format... or did they ask for better networking opportunity? Because this absolutely does not accomplish that, imo.
