@CamronBryantPhD I'm still waiting on the 'half off registration discount next year' they offered as a mea culpa that they promised they'd reimburse if I paid the full registration up front...

@JohnStreicher1 I think it IS being driven by a small number of elite programs, but I see enough smaller programs trying to short-sightedly 'keep up with the Joneses' without ever really stopping to examine why.

FWIW most of our applicants and admitted students don’t have pubs or postbacs. Average GPA is ~3.4. I wonder how much of this perception is driven by a small number of elite programs? I didn’t get into those programs either 24 years ago.

@StephenMaren Final numbers as of Wed morning were 23k+ in person, 1.2k+ virtual attendees for 24k+ total. Not too bad at all, considering the state of the world. On the con floor and lecture ballrooms, it felt very much like before-times with somewhat more masks.

@DrMay5 @JohnStreicher1 IIRC 9 of the 10 most highly cited papers in science are methods. Bradford and Lowry assays, PCR, IR spectroscopy... stuff like that. That's not to say they're not impactful; just that 'citation count' isn't always what we think it is.

@JohnStreicher1 A truly brilliant paper could be read by 3 people. A truly mundane/junky paper can be read and cited by hundreds. That does not make the latter "better". As for the "more impactful" framing... that's where the answer is. Does your science impact anyone's life? 2/

@JohnStreicher1 Perhaps our measure of scientific productivity should be...productive science? Some things in life are nebulous and difficult to quantify and discretely define. I think it's about time we remind ourselves that this is one of them.

@amayoco Unrelated to the COVID angle, but regarding that first jackwad, I'd be interested in a semi-exhaustive list of diseases that were "nebulous undiagnosable syndromes" ....what, say 80 years ago? *cough the near entirety of modern medicine cough*

Small child literalism on the first day of school: Me: you've got a whole bunch of new kids in your class this year, how exciting is that? @mwotton: yes, you'll have to show them the ropes! Arthur, 6: what ropes?! 🤣

These are our new vision check eye charts for kids who aren’t comfortable with letters yet. Almost all four-year-old boys refer to the symbol in the middle upper line as “a butt”. The girls say it is a heart.

@AndrewMNaber A series of arbitrary and arcane rules which are only somewhat internally consistent and on the whole do a poor job operationalizing the world, and despite these flaws, is massively popular? Are we absolutely sure wotc didn't write it?

Today I, once again, fooled Med-PC into thinking that I understand its ridiculous programming language and know what I am doing. Been playing this game for >20 years and found great joy in the fact that some things never change. #nichetweet #behavioralneuroscience #PIWin

@MicTott One of the advantages of attending A&M is that if you add "Aggie graduate [year]" in your email signature, you can totally get away with it.

@MicTott Yeah this is great and all, but...why does a 10-second, routine (for them) procedure cost $400? Best of a bad situation for sure but still does nothing for the root problem

Update: I wrote bad google review (first ever for me) and the Dr is going to refund me because the "procedure" was supposed to be discussed with me prior and it's apparently clear in their notes that that didn't happen. What a good day.
Michael Totty@MicTott

You wonder why people wait way too late to go to doctor and yet a 10 minute ENT visit ended up costing me $600 ($166 after insurance). Complete loss of faith in a physician that doesn’t clarify that a 10 second laryngoscopy will be $400.
