Sorting through a few old racing publications this morning and came across this “banger” in Alice Plunkett’s Diary from a copy of Pacemaker from 2002👏👏

@racingblogger Bad ride. Questionable entry anyway but he’s set that up perfectly for the others.

@itvracing The amount of people lying about what they saw or using hindsight to attack Townend…. It was tragic. It was also an accident and mandatory pull ups after mistakes at fences isn’t the answer. I hope Paul has some security tomorrow.

"It was only when they'd gone past the winning line... That's when the action changed. It was only at that point that Paul [Townend] became aware." James Given, Director of Equine Health and Welfare at the BHA, speaks with Rishi Persad about Gold Dancer.

@LukeElderTV @markthecard Have spent the last half hour trying to find the video but perhaps it’s one those that has been pulled. Was Exeter 31/01/2005.

If a horse slithers like that on landing it should be a rule that they must be pulled up, regardless of point in the race, nothing good has ever come from continuing Welfare HAS to be the priority, today is a really sad occasion at Aintree that could possibly have been prevented

@paulcomp The exact same thing happened to Ruby with Kauto Star and Killultagh Vic, both incredibly good horses and the latter was never the same after. Kauto missed a lot of time after Exeter from memory.

@LukeElderTV @VB_Guide He looked stiff after the last but clearly wrong ? What do you class as a slither and where do we draw the line ? Should Highland Legacy have been pulled up yesterday ?

@VB_Guide In this situation maybe it was, but he was clearly wrong after the last. Not saying anything against Townend, I’d just rather look after the bigger picture and the horses that give us so much pleasure.

@thespieler Yeah - I quite fancied Gorgeous Tom for this back in the autumn, related to Cappa Bleu and Cahervillahow ( 2nd in national that never was ), but he seems more of an old National type now

3 of the best 12 Grand National performances in Timeform's history were put up by the first 3 home last year. An illustration of the sort of class you need for the National now
Timeform@Timeform

📊 Here are the greatest performances in the history of the Grand National, on the Timeform ratings. One of horse racing's most memorable moments; CRISP's agonising defeat in the 1973 tops our rankings. Carrying top-weight of 12st, Crisp conceded an incredible 23lb to Red Rum.
