1857 rebel soldiers reached Delhi in May and proclaimed Zafar as their leader. In early June, Zafar wrote to the British through a Maulvi who was British spy in Mughal side proposing to open gates from Salimgarh side for the British in return for restoration of his pension. The Delhi rebellion ended in September in three months. Zafar stepped out of palace to support the soldiers once. He marched 100 feet and then stood still for more than an hour and then then marched back to his palace. He has been positioned as great patriot and warrior by the narrative builders.
