@MaAlfaidi @ArcSuellen @Vascular_Prot So from a sample perspective, the platelets in this study are from the *exact* time of infarct, rather than later on. It was technically (and physically/emotionally!) pretty difficult to do, but @BartsHospital was incredibly supportive.

Being the only scientist in my family makes me feel that communicating our science to our peers is as important as communicating it to society as a whole. 😅 So, @Vascular_Prot, can u (or anyone) explain more about ST-segment-elevation MI (STEMI) for the general audience?

@atvbahajournals @Vascular_Prot @cardiacjoshi Elevated S100A8/A9 levels reflect neutrophil activation. Platelets get pre-activated by neutrophil activation, leading to a "platelet exhaustion phenomenon" during ex vivo testing. This would explain challenges with using aggregometry to guide antiplatelet therapy in acute MI.

@atvbahajournals @Vascular_Prot @KingsCollegeLon @TheBHF This study in Blood from colleagues in Birmingham identifies S100A8/A9-GPIbα axis as a novel targetable pathway that induces procoagulant platelets and fibrin formation, particularly in diseases associated with high levels of S100A8/A9.

The transfer experiments between neutrophils and platelets are interesting in figure 4, and you elegantly showed that S100A8/a9 as a soluble factor is taken up by the platelets, but to do what? @Vascular_Prot @KingsCollegeLon @TheBHF
