But CUSMA doesn’t expire, it’s locked in until 2036 either way. The deal now moves into mandatory annual reviews instead of one clean renewal. Tariff exemptions stay in place. Nothing changes for cross-border flow this week. Full US withdrawal is a different animal. It needs six months’ formal notice, and if the US pulls it, the deal keeps running between Canada and Mexico. Trump has said he’d be “better off” without it, but neither he nor his trade team have actually triggered that clause. That’s the tell. Threatening to walk costs nothing. Actually walking blows up auto supply chains that are deeply integrated into red states, and 90 percent of what Canada ships south still moves duty free because of this deal. My read: withdrawal is unlikely in the next year. What’s likely is more of this, annual reviews used as leverage, sector-specific tariffs stacked on top (steel, aluminum, autos, lumber), and talks dragging past the midterms. Trump gets more out of keeping Canada guessing than he does out of blowing up a deal his own agriculture and auto lobbies are begging him to keep.

And a month ago, on June 1, a brand new $6 billion transmission line called Champlain Hudson Power Express started sending Quebec hydropower straight into Queens. It now covers 20 percent of NYC’s electricity demand. That’s enough for 1 million homes, flowing in from Hydro-Québec dams, on a 25 year contract. Before that line went live, NYC got roughly 90 percent of its power from fossil fuels and about 3 percent from hydro. This heat wave is exactly the kind of event that line was built for. Peak demand, grid stress, and a fifth of the city’s power now coming from Canada. That’s an engineering decision New York made after 15 years of planning because it needed the supply. Doesn’t need anything from Canada. Sure.
