Sejujurnya buatku pribadi, yg paling memperkaya wawasan itu ngobrol dgn banyak org. Melampaui baca buku. Human's mind is limitless indeed.

@Alfamaulana01 @ghozyulhaq Kalau ada yg bilang anak diasuh ibunya sendiri juga belum tentu bener, nah memang disitu masalahnya. Ngurus anak itu emang bikin capek mental dan fisik, apalagi anak orang yg hubungannya transaksional

Justinian’s biggest failure? One could argue it was not preventing the destruction of Antioch - possibly the second greatest city in the Roman world in the 6th century. How could this happen?! In May 540 the Persians under Khusro I advanced into Roman territory, sacking cities with impunity. Justinian did not want this distraction from his Western campaigns - and the Persians knew it “When Roman envoys came, the king of kings offered to withdraw altogether from Roman territory for ten centenaria in gold. In the meantime, he (Khusro) sacked Beroea, and some of the garrison there subsequently defected to the Persians, a sign of the poor motivation of many limitanei(border troops) at this time.” “Justinian was unwilling to pay for peace, so the king of kings pushed on towards the Mediterranean coast. At Antioch, the population was encouraged by the arrival of six thousand Roman troops, so much that their leaders dismissed Khusro’s fresh demand for ten centenaria to leave them unmolested. Yet the old vulnerability of the city’s walls had only been made worse by a recent earthquake, and they were not in a good enough state to cope with a full-scale assault. Antioch’s citizens did their best to resist but were swiftly overwhelmed. The Roman regular troops played little part in the fighting and marched out of one side of the city as the Persians swarmed over the walls on the opposite side.” Antioch was a huge city - it’s “population numbered several hundred thousand, perhaps as much as half a million, but a good number has already fled. Even so, that captives and plunder from the sack of Antioch were the greatest won by any Persian army in recent conflicts. One church was spared after treasure had been handed over, but the rest of the city had was burned or otherwise destroyed.” After this Khusro went city to city collecting ransom payments not to destroy their city like Antioch. After that - Justinian ended up paying 5 times initially requested sum, 50 centenaria, to end the war. So Justinian let Antioch and other cities be sacked and pay ransoms, all because he wouldn’t pay - then paid 5 times more! And he had to recall Belisarius from Italy, to help secure the situation which damaged that war effort as well. But the Persians had a laugh - “Using some of the spoils, a new city was built near Ctesiphon…the king of kings deduced to call it Veh-Antioch-Khusro, or ‘the better Antioch of Khusro’, to remind everyone of what he had done.” Source - Rome and Persia: The Seven Hundred Year Rivalry by Adrian Goldsworthy

The greatest operational victory of the Roman Empire was the conquest of the Vandal Kingdom. In just one year, the Vandal Kingdom, which had caused great damage to the Empire (loss of Africa led to the fall of the Roman West), was gone, and the breadbasket of empire regained. The Mediterranean was safe once again. And all that achieved by a mere 17.000 soldiers!

The Saint Catherine Greek Orthodox Monastery at Mount Sinai in Egypt 🇪🇬 is indeed a remarkable and historic institution, holding an extraordinary record in both religious and cultural heritage. Established by Emperor Justinian I in 6th Century, (around 548 CE), the monastery has operated almost continuously for 1500 years, making it one of the oldest functioning monasteries in the world. Since its founding by Emperor Justinian, the monastery has remained a center of Christian monasticism and worship. Its location at the foot of Mount Sinai, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments, adds to its spiritual and historical importance. The monastery has survived various challenges over the centuries, including invasions, political changes, and conflicts in the region, maintaining its role as a place of devotion and learning. The monastery houses one of the oldest and most significant libraries in the world, with a collection of ancient Christian manuscripts and texts that are invaluable to scholars. Its library contains thousands of rare texts, many of which are written in Greek, Syriac, and other early Christian languages. Among its treasures is the Codex Sinaiticus, one of oldest known manuscripts of the Christian Bible, dating back to 4th Century CE. This makes the monastery's library not only one of the oldest but also one of the most important for understanding early Christian theology and scripture. The monastery holds a remarkable collection of early Christian icons and religious art, which are some of the oldest surviving examples of Christian iconography. These icons, some dating back to 6th Century, are of immense artistic and theological value, providing insight into the development of Christian visual culture during the Byzantine period. The monastery's art reflects the fusion of Byzantine traditions with local influences from Egypt and the broader Middle East. Saint Catherine's Monastery is not only a living place of worship but also a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its cultural and historical importance. Its significance as a pilgrimage site, particularly for those of the Eastern Orthodox faith, is profound. The monastery has been a symbol of Christian endurance in a region that has seen many shifts in power and religion over the centuries. The monastery itself is an architectural marvel, with its well-preserved buildings, walls, and fortifications. It is one of the best-preserved examples of early Byzantine monastic architecture. The chapel of the burning bush (where Moses is said to have encountered God) is a key feature of the monastery and draws pilgrims from all over the world. #archaeohistories

Sisters in Danger x Simponi@SistersInDanger

By far the grandest Roman baths in Constantinople were the famously beautiful Baths of Zeuxippos. There was a magnificent collection of ancient statues “of which 80 — of pagan mythical figures, poets, philosophers, etc were described in the reign of Anatastios I by Christodoros of Koptos.” According to Anthony Kaldellis, the bath complex “stood between the palace, the hippodrome and the square known as the Augousteion). Malalas records Constantine endowed the baths with columns and statues, the latter presumably including many (if not all) of the eighty statues (some in groups) that are described by Christodoros.” Backing up the claims of Christodoros, archaeologists in the 20th century actually “turned up two statue bases with the names of Hekabe and Aischines, figures who received epigrams in the Ephrasis. So Christodoros was writing about a real collection.” Sadly, the baths were destroyed by fire during the Nika riots in 532. Justinian rebuilt the baths, but they were rebuilt without the former plethora of statues. Statue-making had declined as an artform significantly by the 6th century. So the building lost a lot of its wonder, even if it did return to use for a time. Originally, according to the Notitita urbis Constantinopolitanae, Constantinople had nine public baths as well as 153 private ones. After the 6th century, even though Justinian rebuilt Zeuxippos, public bathing as a social practice was declining. Eventually, the population of Constantinople declined and the state, in an existential crisis just to survive against the aggression of the Caliphate, could not afford to upkeep them. Private baths and some smaller ones operated by the Church did continue though. In the early 8th century, the Baths of Zeuxippos were retired, last recorded as being used for their original function in 713AD. After that, being a large building, it was reused. Part of the complex became a prison, known as the Noumera. It also held an imperial silk workshop.
