@Great_Chumpion @WokeAnnUpdates I'm splitting hairs here tbh - Maine being D+13 instead of D+20 or whatever doesn't make a Collins loss any less certain - but the state moved pretty similarly to other heavily white states from 2020-24, and I don't see why that would change now

You'll never hear it from YIMBYs, but Maine has been doing a *fantastic* job building affordable government assistance, and we've seen a LOT of liberals moving there as a result.

@purplewaves7 But broadly, socialism and even things like m4a, to a degree, aren’t really compatible with the sort of pastoralist, anti-monopoly vision. Inevitably we will collide with small hospitals, small businesses, local governments, etc, and large parts of the base will turn on us

@milquesoc i think lowkey most people don't make a connection between supporting anti-monopoly policy and opposing nationalization in their minds. no one is trying to argue medicare for all is bad because it would create a health insurance monopoly for example

@purplewaves7 Part of this is just that I’m a crank on this issue, but the vast majority still definitely think monopoly/concentration is the biggest structural issue with this economy. Hard to imagine convincing them now of broad public ownership or even just like industrial policy

@milquesoc i think "america should be more like norway/sweden" has way more buy in than anti-monopoly policy among people who consider themselves socialists in america. they want an expanded welfare state above most else

@tristanbard0516 @purplewaves7 There are a lot of people who don’t really have strong opinions but will call themselves socialists if pushed. This is what I think the base is, and their instinct on these issues (esp. things like housing and electricity) also tends to be “break up the monopolies”

@purplewaves7 Almost all the more checked-out young “socialists” I know are really just anti-monopoly. To what degree I know their opinions on state ownership, they resemble those of the anti-monopoly people like Stoller (?) who objected to the proposal in principle

@milquesoc I think the negative reaction to that has more to do with people online wanting AI to be straight up banned rather than hostility to state ownership as a concept

@cluckerbuck1 @bdquinn I guess I’m trying to say that these two aren’t really traditional progressives, but something new and more worrying - their biggest and main promise is to massively cut taxes across the board, which I can’t imagine is without strong appeal to apolitical/mod voters

@milquesoc @bdquinn Suburban liberals are not suburban moderates. The latter outnumber the former and have leaned Dem but that can quickly change.

I haven't seen them articulate this yet quite this clearly, but I think they're thrilled at Dems running a lot of Socialist/Socialist-adjacent (Platner, El-Sayed) candidates who could cause Dems to fumble a lot of their suburban gains. Trump loathing might prevent that, though.
