I actually wrote my thesis on this and the way Western celebrities can de-nationalise their activities but non-western acts (I focused on bts) can’t, as their activities are seen inherently as nation branding tools that present an answer to the western cultural hegemony

BTS shouldn’t be seen as cultural ambassadors for SK anymore than Taylor Swift is a cultural ambassador for the US or Drake for Canada.

@kitteewhysker I honestly believe the only reason they weren't was that they decided they didn't want to. because, for part of the (specially korean) public, it would taint their imagine, like they were being unfairly privileged. so they decided to do it to avoid people being mad at them

of course it would be ideal if everyone could be out safely and happily but this is a take that forgets a lot of nuance
for many, being in the closet can mean protection and being outed when they're not ready can mean real harm. the closet can also mean safety, even if momentary.

Hudson and Connor were so open about what a healthy male friendship should look like, they said countless times that it’s nothing more than platonic love, and these ppl refused to respect that.
