Doesn’t have to be through an oral examination but I am convinced that everyone in academia could stand to be asked “What do you mean by that word? What does that phrase mean?” way more often.

If you so much as quote T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets in a piece of writing, you still have to pay. It is basically a denial of Eliot's cultural impact to insist that this work belongs to an estate and not to human culture.
