"Never before has the government taken over so many boards, including the two largest in the province, and the move has left families and observers wondering what’s next. Some say Education Minister Paul Calandra is laying the groundwork for a system without elected trustees, and this is a trial run for a new governance model. Others believe he’s gone overboard in trying to control school boards." #onpoli #onted

A simple message with big meaning: "I am somebody." We are grateful to Rev. Jesse Jackson for helping teach generations of children to believe in themselves and in one another. Thank you for being part of our neighborhood. 💛💚

"The race isn’t given to the swift, neither to the strong, but to he who endures to the end.” Ecclesiastes 9:11 There are architects of America. And then there are the pillars. The kind you don’t just remember, you lean on. The Reverend Jesse Jackson was not simply a participant in history. He was infrastructure. A living, breathing bridge between protest and policy. Between the pulpit and the presidency. Between what was promised and what was possible. He was the son of Greenville, South Carolina who heard the spirit of Yes, We Can before it was spoken. His 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns were not symbolic runs. It dared America to see itself differently. To count us fully. To hear us clearly. He did not ask politely for inclusion. He demanded access. Ownership. Dignity. Not just for himself, but for those who marched until their feet blistered. For our parents who organized when it was unpopular. For the generations who now shape a future that once felt unreachable. Today, we don’t just remember him. We stand on what he strengthened. We build higher because he built first. May the Angels hear the chants of Hope being kept alive as the clouds welcome you to your rightful place. Job well done. Ascend.

When little ones hear about violent events on the news or in their communities, it can be hard to help them understand and cope with what happened. Limiting media exposure and making space for them to express big feelings can help children feel safer and more secure. Every parent and educator in #OntEd needs to be alarmed that @PaulCalandra is visiting charter schools. His government has starved our public schools of resources. The next page in the Conservative playbook is to offer privatization as the solution to problems they caused.

The Ontario Science Centre’s roof didn’t buckle under the weight of all the snow that fell today in Toronto. The engineer’s report that was used as an excuse to close it recommended repairs but not a shut down. The government shut it down anyway.

Today we recognize Lincoln Alexander Day, honouring his legacy as Ontario’s first Black MPP and Lieutenant Governor, and a lifelong advocate for education, equity, and public service. As he reminded us, "It is not your duty to be average. It is your duty to set a higher example for others to follow." On this day, we reflect on his leadership and recommit to building inclusive, welcoming schools where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Ford gave his Minister of Education, Paul Calandra, total control of the 600 TDSB schools and the education of 240,000 students. Calandra just eliminated the maximum class cap of 32 students in Middle schools. We need our elected trustees back—people who elected to serve students and parents—not a Minister of Education with no education experience brought in to privatize the system. #ONpoli #OntEd

TDSB trustees voted last March to cap class sizes in grades 4 to 8 at a maximum of 32 students. The provincially-appointed supervisor recently rescinded that directive. torontotoday.ca/local/educatio…

In his own words, the Education Minister tells @ColinDMello this morning, "...I want more authority to step in," and says the passing of Bill 33 gives him the power to do so across all school boards. Make no mistake, the Ford government has a calculated plan to overhaul public #onted. #onpoli

On the Friday just before Christmas, the Conservatives quietly announced they're going to sell off some public schools. The Conservatives want to close schools and sell off the land to the highest bidder because they want to plug a massive Conservative-government-created funding shortfall. They're creating a new problem to fix a problem of their own making, and it's our kids who will be paying the price. Parents at Heydon Park Secondary School worry the government wants to close their school. This is a high school that specializes in teaching vulnerable kids who struggle in the mainstream school system. Selling off schools does NOTHING to solve our school system's chronic underfunding issues because Ontario gets to generate revenue from the sale of school property only once. Parents want to know: What schools are they looking at selling off? What happens in five or ten years from now when some of these school sites might be needed again because Toronto is a rapidly growing city? Will that money stay in the school board, or will the sale just give the government the license to cut school board funding even further? If a school has to be sold, sell it to another school board or the city so the land remains in service to the public. I am so angry right now. thestar.com/politics/calan…

How is incorporating climate justice, the legacy of anti-Black racism in Canada, Indigenous perspectives, diverse worldviews, and the importance of protecting human rights in learning "wacko," Premier @fordnation? It’s actually part of the Ontario curriculum. #onpoli
Tina Yazdani@TinaYazdani

Premier Ford accused the Liberals of teaching kids “every wacko, left-wing radical thing” & “destroying the school system” during a heated Question Period. He was responding to the interim Liberal leader who told him to “stand up for kids” & to stop starving the education system.
