Xabi Alonso to Chelsea actually makes more sense than people think. His 3-4-2-1 isn’t a massive tactical leap for this squad. Under Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, Chelsea have already spent long periods building attacks with three defenders in possession. And what this means is that they are already introduced to playing with 3 defenders at the back, so it is not going to be utterly strange to the players. This matters a lot. Players like Reece James and Malo Gusto are far more dangerous when they’re constantly attacking space instead of sitting deep as traditional full-backs. Most especially Reece James; however, he might have to play a different position based on his injury-prone situation, but everyone knows he plays his best football as a wingback. That role is naturally made for him. The same applies centrally. Enzo Fernández would finally have runners and movement ahead of him, rather than being forced to play safe passes under pressure. And he would also have Caicedo to partner him as the double pivot just as Xabi likes his midfield to look like. Caicedo has the energy to roam about while Enzo sets up the play’s tempo and finds the runners ahead with his passes. Then there’s Cole Palmer. Alonso’s system creates pockets between midfield and defence, exactly the areas Palmer loves drifting into. It's going to be interesting seeing him receive those passes in the pocket from Colwill and the likes. Chelsea doesn’t really lack technical quality. What they’ve lacked is a structure that consistently brings their best players into the game. And Maresca has already built the foundation, Xabi can come in and take it to the next level and that is why I think his joining just fits this team naturally.
