Amazing stuff from Generalist! Some notes (1/n): - Some of these UMI style grippers have an INSTA360 camera on them... I really wonder what utility a robot might get from seeing ITSELF during operations. - You can see someone collecting data in the background (0:59).

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟱𝟱 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮.𝟱 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 🤖⚡ Today, our @ETH Robot Learning course successfully assembled 𝟱𝟱 𝗦𝗢-𝟭𝟬𝟭 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 robots to kick off the second half of the semester! In parallel to my weekly lectures, we have spent the first weeks mastering the fundamentals of robot learning in simulation with homework assignments. Now we finally move to real robots. I am excited to see what the students will build as they spend the coming weeks implementing 𝗩𝗟𝗔𝘀, 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼-𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀, 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗟 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 directly on real hardware! Huge thanks to my TA team for making this hardware marathon possible. This is very much a collective effort: together, we are striving to build a scalable, hands-on robot learning course that brings cutting-edge research into the classroom 🚀

(3/3) - Can't really tell if the end-effector has any force sensing. - I noticed they're using force-sensitive cobots (e.g. Flexiv). I wonder if they're stringing force or impedance control into the loop, and how kinesthetic information might play a role for their models.

(2/n) - UMI data seems to do a great job at generalizing to other embodiments, BUT, the kinematic constraints are real! You can hear the actuators screaming in some of the arms! I wonder if they use any embodiment awareness in their training processes.

This is my new thing Dollhouse: we hire out humanoid robots (with character) to entertain at your events, parties, and conferences! We're deploying humanoids to use-cases that they are already good enough to perform today in production: entertainment, where the value is not so much "do something a human does, cheaper and more efficient" but rather "I'll pay a premium for a robot to do this because robots are cool!" This is our first robot "character", Belmont. He's a robot butler that walks around with his little tray and passes out hors d'oeuvres and drinks at parties. He's already entertained at a few events in the past few weeks, and he's now available for you to book for yours! No demo period at this company! We're going straight to production 💪 I'm excited about Dollhouse because it provides a few things: - For consumers, they get to see robots living among us in the real world now, where they live, instead of always "somewhere else on Tiktok". This is important, it's not enough for us to have cool tech and show videos of it, people need to see the cool stuff and get access to it and see how it improves their lives (in this case, by making their party cooler) - As a roboticist, it provides a great environment to learn more about how to make humanoids safer and more interactive operating around humans. We're building on top of the most battle-tested humanoid platform in the world right now, the Unitree G1. Having a deployed use-case with paying customers provides a level of focus that accelerates R&D toward its goals. In house tactile sensor prototype. Detects taps, motion, and multiple contact with force magnitudes. Built to be cheap, robust, and replaceable. Not in our demos yet, still WIP. We pair simple tactile sensing with torque transparent joints to recover rich contact without expensive sensors.
