Venerable Matteo Farina was an Italian teenager whose brief life of faith and courage amid suffering has made him a model for young people in the modern world. Born on September 19, 1990, in Avellino, Italy, he grew up in Brindisi with his parents Miky and Paola and his older sister Erika. From an early age Matteo showed a deep spiritual sensitivity. He was an excellent student with a passion for science and music, yet his true focus remained on his relationship with God. He attended daily Mass when possible, prayed the Rosary, read Scripture, and went to confession weekly. At age nine he had a profound dream in which Saint Pio of Pietrelcina told him that the secret to happiness is avoiding sin and urged him to share this message with others. This encounter shaped the rest of his life.
At thirteen, just before his birthday, Matteo began suffering severe headaches and vision problems. Doctors diagnosed him with a grade-three brain tumor. The illness brought years of surgery, chemotherapy, and hospital stays, yet he never lost his joy or his faith. He continued his studies, played music in a band with friends, maintained close relationships with family and his girlfriend, and offered his suffering for the salvation of souls. Even as his body weakened, Matteo radiated peace and encouraged those around him to live without sin so they could enter heaven together. He received his last Holy Communion on April 13, 2009, and died peacefully on April 24, 2009, at the age of eighteen.
Matteo’s reputation for holiness spread quickly after his death. His cause for sainthood opened in 2016 when he was named Servant of God. On May 5, 2020, Pope Francis declared him Venerable, recognizing his heroic virtue. Today his tomb in the Brindisi-Ostuni Cathedral remains a place of prayer, and his example continues to inspire many to pursue holiness in ordinary life, especially amid hardship.
