The Packers can extend Christian Watson at any time. The "12 month rule" says the contract of a veteran player may not be renegotiated TO INCREASE THE SALARY to be paid during the ORIGINAL TERMS of the contract for a period of 12 months after the player's most recent contract renegotiation. Watson signed his extension in September 2025, but the Packers included massive salary & bonus placeholders in his 2027-2028 void years specifically to get around this restriction for themselves or another team if they were to trade him before the 2026 season. Packers can easily extend Watson to a new contract before the 12 month window and "not increase" his salary thanks to these placeholders. The Packers did not do the same void year placeholder treatment with Jordan Love when they did his mini-extension in 2023 - that's why they needed to wait. I hope this helps.
