While Star Wars: A New Hope began shooting 50 years ago today on March 22, 1976, sound designer Ben Burtt had already been hard at work on the film for many months. He was busy recording animals, machinery, vehicles, and all manner of distinct objects in his efforts to build a vast library with which he would design original sounds. Big Trouble in Little China is another example of Kurt Russell & John Carpenter knocking it out of the park. This film & The Thing are each timeless pieces of cinema. Russell’s been on my mind a lot lately with his new show The Madison. Might need to rewatch this film now.

James Tolkan has died at 94. "Son, your ego's writing checks your body can't cash." - Top Gun (1986) This scene is a masterclass in movie shorthand. In seconds you get Maverick’s attitude, his history, how he flies, and the entire setup. And Tolkan absolutely nails it.

Deep skill. Full command of the machine. That used to be called a company. The question is no longer what do you know. It is what can you build with the machine that knows everything. And the people who cannot answer that are not falling behind. They already fell.
