Infographic on Greece's expanding regional military footprint (which does not explicitly include Lebanon, but I'll explain): Saudi Arabia - Greece has maintained a Patriot PAC-3 air defense battery in Yanbu since 2021, which today successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting nearby critical oil infrastructure. Operation Aspides - A Greece-led European Union naval mission since 2024 to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea and surrounding waters from Houthi attacks. The mission's name is derived from the Ancient Greek word for "shields." Greek-made Centaurus anti-drone systems have successfully soft-killed Houthi drones. Lebanon - Through the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Greece has one frigate off the coast of Lebanon and helps train the Lebanese Navy to assume full responsibility for maritime security eventually. Since 2025, Lebanese Armed Forces officers have been undergoing 4-year training at Greek military schools. Greece also donated M-113 Armored Personnel Carriers, Steyr 680M General Utility Vehicles, and spare parts to the Lebanese army earlier this year. Cyprus - With already 1,000 soldiers and an undisclosed amount of special forces, Greece boosted its presence on the island earlier this month by deploying four F-16 Viper fighter jets and two frigates. Operation Irini - It is a European Union military operation launched in 2020 to enforce the United Nations arms embargo on Libya. "Irini" is the Greek word for "peace." Greece and Italy rotate as leaders of the operation every six months. West Balkans NATO Air Policing - The Greek air force safeguards the airspace of Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, which do not have fighter jets. Bulgaria - Greece protects Bulgaria through a specialized air and missile defense shield, which was initiated this month at the request of the Bulgarian government. Greek PATRIOT missiles and F-16 fighter jets protect Bulgarian airspace.

🇬🇷🇸🇦🇮🇷 BREAKING: The Greek PATRIOT missile defense system stationed in Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted two barrages of Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at the SAMREF refinery, a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's Aramco and US-based Exxon Mobil. Fragments of the missile interception have fallen on facilities of the SAMREF refinery, causing minor damage. The Greek PATRIOT system is located near the SAMREF refinery, in the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea, and was deployed originally to protect the region from Houthi attacks. The Iranian attack follows similar attacks on energy facilities in Qatar and the UAE, in response to US-Israeli attacks on Iranian energy facilities. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has issued an evacuation warning for several oil facilities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, including SAMREF. However, with Greek military personnel fully alert, the Saudi's have nothing to worry about regarding SAMREF.

Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias announced today that a Greek Patriot air defense battery in Saudi Arabia shot down two Iranian ballistic missiles that were targeting oil refineries in the country. Greece has had a presence in the Gulf nation since 2021 as a part of a bilateral defense pact, the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), between Saudi Arabia and Greece. According to a Reuters, citing a Greek MOND official, this is the first time that Greek military personnel have operated the system.
