Your fence is accidentally trapping your neighborhood’s wildlife in tiny prisons. A 4-inch gap at the bottom of your fence connects your yard to every other yard on the block. Toads, salamanders, chipmunks, and small mammals can't climb fences and don't belong on streets. A solid privacy fence turns each yard into an isolated island, where a single salamander born in your back corner has nowhere to go for the rest of its life. The fix is ridiculously easy: Cut a 4 by 4 inch square at ground level, anywhere along the fence. Smooth the edges. That's it. In the UK, this is called a hedgehog highway and it's a recognized conservation strategy. In the US, the same gap works for turtles, salamanders, and ground beetles trying to find a mate or a den site. The fence stays, but the wildlife gets to move.

at this point, these people are a parody of themselves.

always mildly surprised that the collective grief of the pandemic didn't make people kinder to each other
