From octopuses to snails, the complicated molluscan family tree has been mapped in unprecedented detail, researchers reported earlier this year in Science. This includes sequences for 13 new complete genomes from across the phylum. scim.ag/3LfmvBF

A new study in Science reveals that the global seafood trade plays a substantial role in driving exposure risk to PFAS pollutants worldwide. The findings illustrate the need for stronger international cooperation and stricter policies to reduce human exposure to “forever chemicals” through the marine food system. scim.ag/4qkUqYD

This is the idea of the Effect Hypothesis of Elizabeth Vrba, who posited that ecological generalists with high environmental tolerances have fewer, long-lived species, while specialists have more, short-lived species. A testable hypothesis.

🧬 This is the Tree of Life: 2.3 million species connected through 3.5 billion years of evolution. In a remarkable feat of biological mapping, scientists have created the first digital Tree of Life connecting 2.3 million named species across 3.5 billion years of evolution. This vast “supertree” links organisms from all corners of life—animals, plants, fungi, and microbes—into a single, free, online resource. By combining thousands of smaller evolutionary trees, each focused on specific lineages, researchers have built a comprehensive map showing how life on Earth has diversified over eons. It's been compared to a "Wikipedia" of evolutionary relationships—open, expandable, and invaluable to science. Beyond its scientific elegance, the Tree of Life has practical uses: from tracking disease origins and developing new medicines to improving agriculture and conservation. One of the biggest challenges in its creation was untangling naming inconsistencies—where a single species might have multiple, conflicting labels. The effort is ongoing; as more species are discovered and genetic tools improve, the tree will continue to evolve. But even this early version offers an extraordinary window into the shared heritage of all living things on Earth. Source: Hinchliff, C. E., et al.. Synthesis of phylogeny and taxonomy into a comprehensive Tree of Life. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 112(41), 12764–12769.
