Thanks @Bellarykar (who has studied the history of Miraj extensively) for responding His response can be summarised as: Shrimad Bhagvadgita first ever Sanskrit book printed - probably true. However, Devanagari printing had already begun 2-3 years earlier in Serampore, Bengal. I agree with Kumthekar's take. (1/n) Both Agashe and Kumthekar have based their versions on A K Priyolkar's book "A History of the printing press in India". It's pdf is readily available on internet. Priyolkar has mentioned the colophone but mentions a copy in the Vedapathashala at Rajapur (Ratnagiri). (2/n) So the copy in Kumthekar's collection is not the only one known - just the most 'accessible' one for now. If someone does some fieldwork maybe they will find Rajapur copy and possibly others too...There is another interesting thing related to this. (3/n) Around 1920-22, it was mentioned in a book "Patwardhan Gharanyacha itihas" that the original copper plates which were used to block print the Bhagvadgita are in the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal, Pune. But today they are not known. Gotta do some investigation. (n/n)
Nikhil Bellarykar@Bellarykar

@pathaksudh Not just in Devanagari - it is the earliest known printed version in any script. The colophone mentions Miraj as Markandeya muni kshetra.

Yes it is the first printed version of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta as is in Sanskrit, and perhaps the first printed Devanagari book too. There are two minor variations of the story behind the book (Mr Vasantrao Agashe's and Mr Kumthekar's). Would like to know more x.com/i/status/20397…

@Don1Corleoni There’s only one known copy. The story behind it is thus
Sudhanwa Pathak MBBS@pathaksudh

The First Sanskrit Book Printed in Devanagari Script: Shrimad Bhagwadgeeta (1805 CE, Miraj) Shrimad Bhagwadgeeta remains the first ever Sanskrit book to be printed on a press in Devanagari script. It is also the first one in Devanagari script. Its printing was commissioned in 1805 CE at Miraj by then chief of Miraj Jahgir, Gangadhar Govind Patwardhan. The tale goes that there was one person, a coppersmith by profession, from Pune who had very good handwriting. He was deputed by Nana Fadnavis to Calcutta to learn the art of making copper dies for types from the British. By the time he made those copper types in Devanagari, his patron unfortunately died. And then Peshwa Bajirao II refused patronage to him. Dejected, he sought patronage in Miraj under the Patwardhans, who granted him so. But 1800-1802 was a transition phase as Miraj Jahgir was split into Miraj and Sangli (then a small village that became the bigger Jahgir). By early 1804-5 everything had settled, and then the Miraj chief decided to buy his own printing press. The artisan was assigned the task to set it up. Shrimad Bhagwadgeeta was the first natural choice for the book to be printed. Thus it became the first Sanskrit book printed in Devanagari in 1805. And Miraj had this honour. (Source: Mr Vasantrao Agashe's article in Marathi, also verified by historian Mr Mansingrao Kumthekar) Mr Kumthekar's version is slightly different about this tale, and he being a noted historian of the Miraj region seems more authentic. Nana Phadnavis had planned to get the Geeta printed in Devanagari. He approached Charles Malet for the same, and with the help of Malet the first ever Devanagari types were made by local Pune artisans. But soon Malet left and Nana died. And the project took a backseat. But fortunately then the Miraj chief knew about the project and decided to take over it. He set up a press in Miraj and called over the artisan family with Devanagari types to Miraj. In Shravana of Shake 1727 (1805 CE) the first Devanagari Shreemad Bhagwad Geeta was printed in Miraj. Originally 100 such books were printed. One of the surviving books and the only known one is with Mr Kumthekar. Its picture is attached below.

For many of us who grew up in the 80s/90s… on screen Ram is Arun Govil, Sita is Deepika Chikhalia, Hanuman is Dara Singh& Ravan is Arvind Trivedi. We are fine with arrows that take their own sweet time… flying, pausing mid air, acknowledging each other… before dramatically colliding. So don’t mind us if we are not quite sold on hyper CGI versions of Ram, Hanuman & Ravan.

@DrDhruvchauhan How many postgraduates write MBBS in their degree? Not all. Of late MS and MD can be done in Ayush too hence people have started again writing MBBS MS or MBBS MD. A random person never devalues ' plain ' MBBS. It's our fraternity that does.

Medical students will spend 5.5 years of their life struggling , endless nights studying ,learning countless skills during internship ,suffering physical and mental burnout, living away from their families just to be called “Plain MBBS has No Value” by a random person in India !
