I wouldn’t want Shaka era Marquette’s shot doctor anywhere near my professional resume
Jack Albright@JackAlbrightMU

Nevada Smith was a huge part of #mubb's offensive successes under Shaka Smart. He ran an NBA-style offense with an emphasis on only 3-pointers and layups. When players needed help fixing their jumpers, they'd go to Smith, the team's resident shot doctor. Big loss for Smart.

We've turned college basketball coaches into general managers as if it's not a completely different skillset and responsibility. It's incomprehensible that any top-tier program is trying to do this without a real GM. In this climate, it's a 24/7 gig that most coaches can't do.

@CrookedNumbers It’s not like they, won the national championship and followed it up with a one seed or anything I have a good understanding of the four factors. I’m not sure why you’re opposing a tweet that insists Shaka Smart should try to have even a decent rebounding team.

@patrickksl Nah, I just think it's funny that Florida lost right after an article touted them as some kind of genius trendsetter. As for rebounding, it remains the third most important of the four factors. They breakdown as follows: eFG%: 40% TO%: 25% O-Reb%: 20% FT Rate: 15%

Shaka Smart’s Marquette teams at rebounding rate, national ranks: 2022: 324th O/313th D 2023: 251st O/311th D 2024: 285th O/270th D 2025: 179th O/245th D 2026: 215th O/331st D Dominating the glass is becoming a priority for top teams, but isn’t even on the radar at MU.
Kevin Sweeney@CBB_Central

Todd Golden made an interesting point to me on the lack of upsets: Elite teams have gone from slanting towards skill + playing 5-out to going all-in on dominating at the rim. It’s a higher-floor brand of basketball and the hardest style for MMs to match: si.com/college-basket…

@CrookedNumbers Yeah, you’re right, being bad at rebounding is fine because Florida didn’t repeat as champions

@MubbOldtimer Rebounding is important and they shouldn’t be bad at it They should be good at it like most elite teams

@patrickksl Right, I agree. So do a dozen teams (or more) that made the tournament. Outlier does not equal loser.

@patrickksl It's okay to be an outlier and to play a different style. In fact it can work to advantage. 2022-24 didn't have great rebounders or real strength and did fine. We had a huge crisis of execution, to be sure. But bad execution doesn't mean you have to totally change strategy.

@patrickksl No doubt that should be (has to be) better, but I disagree with the "all-in" concept. Houston, St Johns, Texas Tech all have 150+ DReb ratings and do fine. Vanderbilt and Arkansas are 120+ both O and D. Get in that range along with running his style O and they will be fine.

@Eddie_Slot515 If you make a Final 4 and go to a S16 another year, you’ve made two S16s

There's a movement afoot, driven by the SEC, to eliminate, reduce or marginalize automatic qualifiers and mid-majors. Get lost with that. The VCUs and High Points put the Madness into March. More mid-majors, less Bruce Pearl please: app.com/story/sports/c… via @asburyparkpress

Good look by Sweeney to show what a Tuesday/Wednesday would look like this year with a 76-team tournament. Total flotsam. None of those teams are worthy of being in the NCAAT, they're all high-majors and all the matchups are less inspiring than three-day-old leftovers.
Kevin Sweeney@CBB_Central

This is what a new “First 12” would look like, based on NCAA seed list, First Four Out, and WAB. Mid-major AQs get pushed down, and still no room for Belmont, New Mexico, Yale, etc. And Akron, South Florida, McNeese likely would’ve missed w/o autobid: si.com/college-basket…
