@DanMulhall Neither is setting out to have no strategy for unity. That’s exactly what the government has been doing.

I don’t see fear of unity as an issue for FF or FG. The question, for them and for others, is how to bring it about & there is no clear answer to that. Wishful thinking is not a strategy for unity.

@robggill Merz is German Chancellor and running on about 24-25% including the Bavarian CSU worth about 6-7 of those percentage points.

SF at 24% is a pretty poor showing for main opposition party, given unpopularity and challenges the Government has. Despite all SF spin - they are polling well below the Gilmore Gale. Especially since in previous terms they would hit a high before declining significantly.

@IrishRail Huge improvements evident all the way down the railway line to Wexford today compared to summer 2024. All the old signage gone. Really modern (apart from the good old steam train that I am on and do not want modernised). Evidence of investment and intent to develop it.

@caulmick I saw McConnell’s first front page and called it and him out and told him directly on Twitter as it was then that I was resigning as a buying reader having bought it since edition 1 in 1990. He replied with some protest or other that he wasn’t changing things but look at it now.

Germany's @AfD have had another big result in state elections - this time Rheinland-Pfalz. They increased their share of the vote by 11% on 2021. This (20%) is the AfD's best performance in state elections in Western Germany. The CDU beat the SPD - a state the SPD have won since 1991 - 35 years! This historic slump for the SPD comes after they had their worst result in state elections since WWII recently in Baden-Württemberg where they achieved 5.5% of the vote. Germans are rejecting the SPD. However, despite the clear mandate for a CDU-AfD coalition, Merz continues his firewall policy and will go into coalition with the SPD. So instead of getting conservative reform which the people of Rheinland-Pfalz (and Baden-Württemberg) have demanded, they will get another globalist-left coalition. The CDU continue to be the greatest threat to democracy in German politics.

@EoinLenihan @AfD CDU trounced the fascists up in the strongly Catholic north of the state except for a few places where the CDU won by a smaller margin. SPD did the same in the cities and the south. AFD got only about 3% in the state capital Mainz, the seat of the German bishops conference.

@patrickvkelly @AfD CDU claim to be conservative (and were traditionally). AfD are conservative (and are largely former CDU voters). They are natural coalition partners. Hope this helped.

@IrishRail We’ve tried that. It doesn’t work. It refuses to offer access even with my son logged in to his Leap Card account. It is refusing to recognise these cards probably because he’s over 16 now. We are also out of pocket another €40 or so from full fares paid awaiting 16-19 Leap card
